Diana And Endymon

Art has many different layers that overlap each other making this painting a good example of the two elements of Rococo and Baroque art.
This painting is titled, Diana and Endymion, the tools are oil paint on canvas. Painted by Michel Francois Dandre-Bardon. There is little to no information of his life as an artist. He was a French visual artist that had 77 known pieces of work. He was born 1700 and died in 1783. In the original story of Diana and Endymion, her name was Selene. Diana was the renewed Roman goddess. “The Romans have adapted Greek mythology to their own ends, and in doing so, modified the myths”(Cavendish 138). This shows the reason why the names were changed. Diana was a goddess based on Selene. In this painting it shows Endymion,

The actual paint used was oil. The colors are lighter on the main subject but they are not too light. They are not pastels like the classical rococo way, but they are not a dark as baroque. The lighter colors are the whiteness of her dress and the skin tones. Also the nice royal blue gives an extra element of color. Part of the blue drapery and the color of their skin could be seen as a semi pastel though. The way the paint is applied and painted is thin and the brush work seems coarse. You can really see the texture and the shape of the muscles. The lighting is used interestingly. At first glance it seems as if the light source is coming from the left, almost in the way and direction cupid is angled. As you keep looking the painting becomes lighter. There is a less direct light source. This piece has both elements of baroque and Rococo art. The semi darkness of the background gives it the dramatic effects of baroque. Most of the light source is on the two subjects, but is also on cupid. The lighting is just on the subjects. It almost has the feel of baroque classicism as well. Which is popular in France. “The dramatic use of chiaroscuro is not quite evident in baroque classicism.” (Dickerson 141). Chiaroscuro, is “changes modeling as three dimensional dramatic changes in light chiaro meaning light and oscuro meaning dark” (stockstad 650). So this painting has some elements of this style …show more content…

For this analysis, the artwork I selected a Volute Krater made in Greece during the 4th century B.C.E. The artist, The Underworld Painter, uses several lines, especially in the temple made for Atlas. The horizontal and vertical lines give the temple definite shape because of the thickness and they signify that a hero who has died, is the focal point on the back of the vase. The artist also uses curved lines at the top of the vase to show the richness of detail and drive the story further. The artist also uses the pointing hands of several figures to show a psychological point; Atlas on his throne and Selene driving her chariot.…

In contrasting pieces of art, it is important to first identify the time period that each work is from. In this essay the pieces of art that are being compared and contrasted are, “Kritios Boy,” from the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, and “Dying Gaul,” from Capitolini in Rome, Italy. Kritios Boy was created during the Early Classical style period (480- 323 BCE). The Early Classical style is often referred to as Severe or Transitional, as it was known to bridge the gap between the Archaic and Classical. There is controversy as to weather the Kritios Boy belongs to the late Archaic period or to the Early Classical period, however the Kritios Boy displays many Early Classical attributes that seem to confirm it as Early Classical.…

The Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology holds numerous pieces of artwork from all different time periods. What makes each of these pieces distinguishable are the specific style and details incorporated, as each civilization from each different era had techniques that were followed that would define their artwork as their own. Progression was shown through the use of emerging techniques. This is shown specifically in a piece at the Museum entitled the Attic Black- Figure Amphora, an ancient Greek piece that has certain elements integrated that was innovative for the time. This work by Exekias is an interpretation and narrative of Greek heroes and myths while showing the progression in the artist’s style over the last few centuries.…

The painting was a portrait of the wife of The Prince of Orange from the Golden Age of Dutch Art. Although the colors are muted and her dress was dull and dark, this didn’t take away from the exceptional detail in the lace and costume in which she wore. I feel that the dark colors contrasted the wonderful details in order to really draw your focus and attention to the embroidery and jewelry she was dressed in, rather that the color she wore. The dark background was smooth and glossy, almost as if it was water, making the portrait look more like a picture of the women than painting of her. After studying the painting further, I could see the faint outline of the fireplace in which she sat in front of, adding an illusion of depth to the piece.…

In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

Art is an expression of the human condition since the time when men and women dwelled in caves. Creativity is not proprietary to what we consider modern times. Jacques-Louis David, a French painter during the neoclassical art period, began his art career painting a few mythology figures and narratives and then later on became an active supporter of the French Revolution therefore influenced the stories for which he depicted in his paintings. In this essay, I will analyze the formal qualities or elements of art such as color, implied motion, and space used as well to analyze the historical/religious context of one of his early paintings before the big transition to the creation of politically influenced paintings. Jacques-Louis David created the painting of, Apollo and Diana Attacking the Children of Niobe, in 1772 (Figure 1). This painting is oil on canvas with an approximate size of 48 by 61 ½ inches. At first glance, this painting had no visible brush strokes and had a very smooth and glossy surface.…

The Last Drop (The Gay Cavalier) My piece of choice is The Last Drop by Judith Leyster. What intrigued me most about this painting was the lingering and threatening feel I received, (while only glancing at the painting passing by!) which is what forced me to pay closer attention to the Baroque styled painting of the seventeenth century. As I leaned in closer, (and began to really take notice of the paintings attributes), I realized that the deep rich oil shading wasn’t the only thing giving me the creeps – but the skeleton hanging above the two subjects of the painting.…

Art-121 Paper Born 1841 in Limoges, France, Auguste Renoir was a prominent figure within the impressionist movement. Spanning essentially from the 1830s to mid-1920’s, the impressionist period was, albeit ironically, named after a satirical article written regarding an eponymous Monet painting, Impression, loleil levant, and is characterized by, “relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities, ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles” (wiki). Whilst best known for his Bal du moulin de la Galette and Le déjeuner des canotiers, the subject of this paper will be Renoir’s lesser known work, Road at Wargemont, the medium of which is oil, supported by canvas.…

One painting that really caught my eye is the painting Jupiter and Thetis by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (Getlein, 2016). This painting was inspired from Homer’s Iliad, “The Greek epic of the Trojan War (Getlein, 2016).” Without knowing what it really means you can tell more or less what is happening based off of the artists creativity. From first sight, you can see A man sitting in a throne which depicts royalty.…
