Since the 18th century the theorist of criminology and the government have tried to understand about why people turn to crime and criminal behaviour. People were relying on religion to find out and understand what good and evil was. The death penalty was also in place at this time which meant people who had done minor crimes such as stealing were getting sentenced to death. (Hosteller 2011). Many journalists and philosophers tried to bring in an early attempt of criminology but failed to do so as they did not take into account that a scientific approach was needed for criminology to work. Their use to be no formal punishments and if you did a minor crime you were sentenced to punishments such as death. There was also a big reliance on religion and spirts to guide them to how they should punish their people for crime. Beccaria wanted to change this and he made a fair method to determine what punishment you got depending on the crime you did, this can still be seen today.
