The question of “designer babies” is one that is fairly recent and controversy of the topic starts from the very definition of the term. When one is presented with the term “designer babies”, Most people imagine a genetically engineered being who is less human and more technology. However, the reality is quite different, it can be argued that even choosing a fertilised cell as an embryo during IVF is a form of a designer baby. “Designer baby” is actually a colloquial term, or it started that way. Few scientists ever use it – the word ‘designer’ implies a consumer good, rather than a human being. A designer baby is a child who has been genetically altered in vitro for specific traits, varying anywhere from gender selection, to a lowered risk of disease (Ly). In vitro fertilization ( IVF) is particularly popular among, and intended for, couples who suffer from fertility problems. IVF is the process of combining the gametes outside of the mother’s body, then implanting the now fertilized egg in her.…

Designer Babies Upon the completion of mapping the human genome in 2003, a whole new side of genetic understanding had opened up; better understanding of genetic diseases, how genes affect personality, and with that, the genetic altering of babies. This new concept of “designer babies” has caused great controversy and many of its harmful effects have gone unrecognized. This form of genetic altering research should not be continued because designer babies create more adverse effects on society than it benefits. They negatively impact our society by causing social segregation, increasing mortality, and by creating detrimental physical and psychological effects on the baby. To begin, one of the main reasons why designer babies negatively…

Designer babies can almost be compared to robots. They are all designed to do and perform the same way and this may be the result in designing children. This will affect biodiversity and affect the child’s freedom because the child will never have the chance to be their own individual. “Moreover, the diversity of the gene pool and human genetics will be affected, and this may even lead to a major percentage of the human race being wiped out completely by some major disease” (Buzzle.com, 2011, Designer para. 6).…

Designer Babies Imagine a society where kids grew up in a defect-free environment. Even if the technology that would create this seems distant, geneticists are actively researching it and there’s even a term for children that could be genetically modified. They’re called designer babies and could revolutionize the effects impairments have on our society. However, this new project could also have a negative effect on our society as well, such as the unsure success rate of the procedure. The use of this technology is a double edged sword, but I believe it could help create a more nourishing environment for youth for every child to thrive.…
