In this photograph, a young boy wearing a bubbly bright blue shirt shamelessly flashes a rather tooth lacking smile for the camera. His arms and legs are crossed while he sits on a tiled bench under an ominous and cloud speckled sky. Behind this young boy rests a little girl wearing a tomato red complexion. She is adorned with a shiny silver necklace and a shirt that literally screamed summer. Under her resting hand laid cold tiles that would leave an imprint of the frigid shapes that pressed against her soft skin. On the back of the bench lays a joyous man who playfully adds bunny ears to the little girl in front of him. The evening sky above them lines up the closing bakeries and stores as the streetlights flickered on. The rich and thick …show more content…
In reality, this photo takes place in Las Vegas within the Paris hotel. This explains why everything seemed to fit into place too well. What is actually happening is the first time this young boy and little girl has ever been to Las Vegas. Having absolutely no exposure to hot weather, we can imagine that this San Francisco born boy had an unpleasantly sticky and hot day in the unforgiving desert sun. While on their dreaded walk down the Las Vegas Strip, the little girl and the young boy begged and pleaded for a cold drink as sweat raced down their faces. Not only that, but the young boy’s damp and sweaty underwear created a hellish wedgie that assaulted him in every way possible. The smell of car exhaust and cigarette butts tainted the already smoggy air. Sexually explicit photos of women were scattered across the streets of Vegas, creating even more discomfort for the young boy. Taking a closer look at the photograph, we see that even with air conditioning and rest, the young boy gives quite a forced smile and grumpily crosses his arms to show dissatisfaction. This photograph has served as a grim reminder for the young boy that hot weather is just

Hunter S. Thompson is an American icon and literary legend. Best known for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his style of journalism is distinct and popular. It is no surprise, if a bit unorthodox, that ESPN would run a piece by him in the aftermath of September 11th. To quote Cheech Marin for Newsweek in 1996, five years before the September 11th attacks, “the imprimatur of literary eminence means Thompson … [is] respected,” and this explains how an article that that decries “all hope for Peace in Our Time” and states that “We are At War now” with a “mysterious Enemy” can still be so well written, so on-the-nose, and receive such a large platform (Marin, 1996, and Thompson, 2001). Thompson has obviously led a fairly colorful life,…

My first time in Miami was December 4, 2009. It was a winter morning, but in Miami there wasn’t a hint of coldness in the air. When we first received the news that we were leaving Cuba everyone was excited and when the day finally arrived it was a little less thrilling and a little more somber. Leaving everything behind and moving to a new country was difficult and leaving a lot of our family was worse. “This is for you and your sister’s future” my parents said when we arrived in Miami I believe they were trying to persuade themselves more than us.…

Another aspect of the Old West Hollywood glazes over is the difficulty of frontier living. In many movies, living in the West is depicted as easy and carefree. This is an extensive misconception. Las Vegas, Nevada—the city known for its flamboyant nightlife and never-ending party—instills a fictional reputation for those living outside of the city. Tourists often see the beauty and elegance proudly marketed by Las Vegas; the city does what it does best—put on a show. The city does nothing more than put a façade to hide the failure to serve our community. I chose to write about Las Vegas because the misconceptions of my hometown affect how people think of me when I introduce myself. Upon saying I was raised in Las Vegas, the immediate response is, “Oh, I didn’t know people actually lived in Las Vegas.…
