MR James’s “The Mezzotint” is set at an English university with its “homely and familiar” (2011, p. 24) libraries, museums and common rooms. This contrasts the stereotypical gothic settings which Dani Cavallaro presents: ruined castles and abbeys, murky crypts and fungoid dungeons, clammy cellars, dank passages and stairwells echoing with howls, groans and tapping fingers, dripping charnel houses and ivy-clad monasteries, secret cabinets, storms, bleak forests and treacherous marshes. (2011, p. 21) However, James claims that “the more ordinary and normal both setting and actors are, the more effective will be the entangling of them in a dreadful situation” (Moshenska, 2012, p.1195). According to Briggs, James also believed that a fairly familiar…

When I first read each of these poem I notice a very interesting difference between the two. While both of the poems are about relationships the major difference between the two are the specific type of relationship they each portray. In Your Hands by Gevorg Emin the relationship Gevorg portrays is a very loving and passionate one between the two people. While in The Clothespin by Rhonda Bower the feeling we get about the relationship is that the two people don’t really love each other and force each other to stay together. The way these two poems contrast each other is also indicative of how many real life relationship between people are.…

Most of today’s society has had an experience like the character in Carolyn Kizer’s poem “Bitch”, by meeting an ex-significant lover/partner when visiting a local place. The awkward first moment while making eye contact with one another just like a past experience, often creates a challenge about the appropriate way to act. Especially, if the past experiences was not pleasant and/or was full of male dominance. Carolyn Kizer shows this in her poem through the theme, which is, you should never chase after something that was never really yours to begin with and is more harmful than rewarding. Beginning with the title, “Bitch”, most readers will associate this word to have two possible meanings.…

Teenagers scattered across the spacious hardwood floor danced wildly to the heavy beat. More teenagers lined the walls and filled in the adjoining rooms. Many of them held cans of beer in their hands as they talked and laughed. Anyone in the nearby vicinity of the large house could tell that there was one heck of a party going on inside the Foster house.…

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

Understanding Hipness: ‘Subcultural Capital’ as a Feminist Tool by Sarah Thornton and Women and the Early British Rave Scene by Maria Pini, both discuss and analyze the social dance culture of the 1980’s. Thornton’s article focused primarily on the culture of clubbing while Pini’s article focused more on rave culture, however both did mention clubbing and raving at points in their article. Both articles carry validity in their arguments however it is important to take bias into account when analyzing their points. Throughout analyzing their articles, I’ve found my own personal criticisms of their writing choices and arguments. Sarah Thornton’s article, Understanding Hipness: ‘Subcultural Capital’ as a Feminist Tool, had three main points:…

My taste in music could best be described as electronic swing, since it is not quite EDM, electronic dance music, and isn't exactly jazz. It's the perfect mix, which presents you with a type of music that resembles art more than a simple melody. Often mistaken for nu-disco, electronic swing creates a modern and dance-floor focused sound that is more readily accessible to the modern ear but that also retains the feeling of live brass and the energetic excitement of the early swing recordings. The best-known artists include Parov Stelar and Caravan Palace while one-off international hits include 'Why Don't You' by Gramophone Dzie or No. 1 World Hit We No Speak Americano by Australian duo…

Diseases and Sicknesses are two negatives people might encounter in their lives and the detrimental effects of these illnesses is the main reason of death. In Thom Gunn’s poem “The Man With Night Sweats” the person is suffering from this disease and he wrote this poem because of the deaths of his friends. Gunn tries to show people how detrimental this disease is as he struggles through life. In “Night Sweat”, written by Robert Lowell, by employing the use of hyperbole and similes, he tries to compare two important and distinct aspects of his personal life, his poetry writing and his disability, whereas in “The Man with Night Sweats” Thom Gunn utilizes visual imagery and the use of hyperbole to create a world where the author suffers from…
