The delegation of Switzerland advocates that statelessness denies people of basic human rights and a right to have a decent life. Switzerland is home to over 10,000 refugees, a number that constantly grows. It is also part of the 1954 Stateless Convention, which deals with the status of stateless people. This document provides detailed rights and protection of stateless people.The delegation of Switzerland also took part in the UNHCR’s Inter- Parliamentary Union, having written “Nationality and Statelessness: A Handbook for Parliamentarians” in 2005. Furthermore, the delegation of Switzerland has written a handbook that explains the procedures for refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless person to be considered part of Switzerland. Only 62 countries have participated in the 1954 Stateless Convention. Half of that number participated in the 1962 Stateless Convention. Truly, only a few countries have been trying to solve this problem. After 9/11, there has been a lot of prejudice against certain countries, especially in the Middle East. These actions decrease the likelihood of countries like the U.S.A to take in refugees from those parts of the world. The first thing that has to be explained is what statelessness is and what problems it causes. The UNHCR should have conferences, walks, and even a national day to honor the people who are stateless.
