Definition Of Love

The feeling that the Swedish rock band is referring to in the opening verse of the song (shown above) is love. Love is that incredible phenomenon that have existed since the beginning of time. Even though this is the case, even though love have existed before any of us were born, there isn’t a definite definition of the word. If you ask a hefty group of people to define the word love, you’d most likely receive a different answer out of each of them. Today, I will showcase an example of this, using a love song from today’s time and love sonnets from the Renaissance.
Let’s go back in time to the year 1557 when Sir Thomas Wyatt’s “Whoso list to hunt” was published. In this poem, Wyatt – who was also a skilled musician and soldier – seemingly

That how I believe Shakespeare viewed loved. To substantiate that statement even more, in the final lines of sonnet 130, Shakespeare admits that the love he has for his lady is rare:
“And yet, by Heaven, I think my love as rare…”
Out of the four definitions of love we looked at today, I believe Shakespeare’s definition is the most equitable comparison to how loved is viewed today. Despite that, the two representations are still differential.
Now that you’ve seen how love was viewed during the Renaissance Era, it’s time to see how the perspective of love in that time, compares to how love is viewed nowadays. Since love songs can be dubbed the modern day version of love sonnets, I will use a very famous one as a comparison stick.
In the year 2001, music legend Michael Jackson (1958 – 2009) released a song titled “You Rock My World.” This song was featured on the album Invincible and it was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2012. This song was a good example of how love is represented today. Which of the four men mentioned above, does this song relate to most? Let’s take a look.
In the opening verse of Michael’s critically-acclaimed song, he starts by saying how impactful his dearest is in his

“I cannot explain the things I feel for you
But girl, you know it's true
Stay with me, fulfill my dreams
And I'll be all you'll need”
To compare to Shakespeare’s sonnet about love, there was a line in Jackson’s song where he also called his love rare.
“The rarest love who'd think I'd find someone like you to call mine”
Based on the words of Michael Jackson in “You Rock My World,” it seems as if he’s saying as long as you and your loved one is happy together, then true love will be reached. That’s yet another definition for love that further proves my claim, which said that there is no definite definition for the word love.
If I had to come up with a perspective of love based on all the definitions we saw today, it would be something like this: The lady who you choose to be your love does not have to be perfect, nor does the life the two of you are living. As long as you and your lover are happy together, then paradise and peace will be achieved.
Love might be undefinable, however, we all know it’s a force that could be the solutions to a lot of the world’s

To discuss “Sonnet 130”, Shakespeare, at first, appears to be rude to his mistress, but later addresses to love her dearly. He seems to be stereotyping the typical love metaphors and saying that the comparison of women to those inanimate objects is wrong. For instance, instead of being straightforward in saying that his woman’s breasts are brown, he is saying that they’re not as white as snow as other poets would describe their lover’s breasts. Also, instead of only saying he loves his woman’s voice, he contrasts it with music being far better for his ears. In almost every line, he humanizes his woman to contrast those women described by inhuman love allegories in other poems.…

Many people assume that their perspective of the world, specifically about love, is that it is straightforward and simple, and that everyone gets a fairytale ending. However, that is not always the case, and usually never is. As seen in pieces like Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and “When Love Arrives” by Sarah Kay & Phil Kaye, it shows that love is unpredictable, complex, and involves varying levels of emotion. Brave New World and “When Love Arrives” both display perspectives of love being erratic.…

Supposedly, courtly love is meant to induce the lover into a state of sadness, as seen through ‘In sadness’; becoming an empty shell of a man as he chases after his ‘love’ hopelessly. Thus, to a Shakespearean reader, these emotions and feelings are all too relatable. Shakespeare unconventionally questions these emotions and products of courtly love, and suggests that courtly love is wrong and that his character is not truly in love; only in love with the act of being in love. To a…

The love between Romeo and Juliet is a delicate and glorious love and invokes images of beauty. This can be perceived when Romeo cries, “My life were better ended by their hate, than death prorogued, wanting of thy love.” (2.2.77) It is apparent just how all consuming and wonderful the love between Romeo and Juliet is, and demonstrates that there is beauty in love. Shakespeare demonstrates to his audience through the theme of love, that although there is darkness in life, so too is there…

What is love? Aside from being an excellent song by Haddaway, it is a favorite subject and theme of William Shakespeare’s work. In the play A Midsummer’s Night Dream, A tale of four people Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, and Helena who go into a forest and encounter some fairies and leave ready to marry each other which they do along with Theseus the king of Athens and his beloved Hippolyta queen of the amazons (no not the online shopping company). In 1890, Count von Moltke, former chief of staff of the Prussian Army for thirty years, gave a speech in Reichstag. He noted that war was as probable as ever and warned, that ‘it may be a Seven Years' War, it may be a Thirty Years' War, – woe to him who sets fire to Europe, and is first to apply the torch to the magazine!’ (Moltke von, 1893 p. 137). Twenty four years later, in the light of Europe’s peaceful prosperity, the torch was applied – Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated on 28 July 1914 in Sarajevo and within weeks, the world was at war. The Great War resulted in deaths of millions, destroyed empires and was one of the history’s great turning points, the catastrophe, which shaped a modern world.…

“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind” (1.1234-35). Love is an irrational emotion, able to change as quickly and suddenly of the wind. People, in the name of love, are willing to overlook much in order to rationalize the actions and words of the subject of their affection. A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare uses wild pansies, night, and dynamic relationships to portray differing definitions of romantic love as a passionate, sometimes, irrational force able to blind lovers to the reality of the world. The first definition of love given is love is the the conquered surrendering to the conqueror.…
