Is it muscles and strength, is it bearing facial hair, is it the clothes you wear or how you look, is it measured by success, is it the amount money they have, is it based on the power or title they hold, or is it something else? What makes a man? What does it mean to be a man? There are many definitions of what a man is in today’s society. For some it is wealth, for others it maybe being hairy muscular, and some see having a family makes you a man, but do all these really make a man? What truly defines a man are the qualities the person holds.
It's a challenge to try and figure out how to become a man in our society. Young men are anxious to prove their manhood, but unsure of how to do it. Throughout time, cultures all around the world have come to understand that without clear guidance on the journey to manhood, males have a difficult time transiting boy to man. Thus, rites of passage were presented in nearly every culture as an important ritual. For ancient Spartans, becoming a soldier was the only way one could be acknowledged as a man. Very few people really know what it means to be a man anymore. Young men struggle trying to make it without clear guidance and young men are anxious to prove their manhood, but unsure of how to do it; however, there is a misconception about being a man. Young men today think that they need to perform an action in order to be a “man”. For many, it is consuming alcohol or drugs, others it is fighting, for some it is having one or multiple girlfriends while being sexually active, and for some it is having physical dominance or women. What young men fail to see is that, they don’t need to perform any physical actions in order to become a man. What makes a man are the qualities they
