The definition of marriage is the partnership or unionship legally recognized as the relationship of two partners who mutually have a romantic chemistry that have chosen to agree to a relationship that has equal rights and responsibility in the pursuit of happiness. Oxford’s English dictionary defines marriage as “The legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman (or, in some jurisdictions, two people of the same sex) as partners in a relationship”. Oxford’s dictionary states that marriage is a union between a women and man or in some places two people of the same gender to be recognized as partners in a relationship. To be recognized as partners in a relationship is the most important aspect of marriage. The right make decisions that both agree to do should be legally protected and not obstructed by outside members. Partners should have the legal right to perform such acts and where they shall live and the way they earn and spend money. The primary focus of the article was to prove how the meaning of marriage has changed throughout history and formed into its present state. In the article the question of why humans began to start to concept of marriage was said to become common nearly “…4,000 years ago, in Mesopotamia…marriage served primarily as a means of preserving power, with kings and other members of the ruling class…to forge alliances, acquire land, and produce legitimate heirs.”. The concept of marriage in its earliest state was seen as just a way to gain property and have offspring that were a recognized as true heirs to the property and power of their family. Later in the article the romance and love was found to appear as the cause of marriage not until the enlightenment movement in the 17th century started “…the idea that life was about the pursuit of happiness.” Marriage was now becoming part of life betterment. It was about now about the having a union between two people that made each party happy. The notion of happiness is an important part of marriage because it allows both members to have a better life due to the partnership they share. Equality between the two members has to be the most important competent. Each member has to have the same benefits and responsibilities.
