surprising definition of balloon is fool. In Irish English, balloon is “a boast idiot.” Without doubt, language is ambiguous. Balloon is an object that produces happiness and which you can play with; even though, in Ireland, it is an insult. Words have power, their history shows the great changes that a word can have over time. One of the richest words that I found is flow, which later became flower. Flowers are important components in all events; I have used and received flowers innumerable occasions. Flowers bring beauty and naturalness to a home; as they give elegance to a celebration. Nevertheless, I had never questioned its name or origins. Flow is originally from the Old English, flowan, dated from 1000. The word flow means “to move with a gentle inclined surface to spread over” (OED). Flow has diverse connotations such as, to bound in, to become overfull, to run full, to gush out, to make fluid, to be unsteady, to pass along the …show more content…
For one wedding, a couple asked me for an antique theme, which is an original concept for a weeding. While I was looking for the items to decorate the wedding, I noticed that antiques are extremely expensive and valuable. The word Antique originated from the Latin, antiqu-us, and from the Old French, antif. We borrowed antique from the French; we used the same spelling of it while the pronunciation is differently. In English, the accent of antique goes in the first syllable, while in French it goes in the last syllable. Antique means “belonging to former times, ancient, olden or called good old” (OED). In 1530, the word form was adjective and noun; until 1753, it had a verb form. Some additional definitions are: old-fashion, behind the time, after the ancient times, old furniture, and a relic. Favorite word and why My favorite word is tintinnabulation. The word, while a mouthful, comes from my favorite poem of all time Edgar Allan Poe's "The Bells." Residing in the first stanza, Poe created the word to describe the lingering sound a bell would make after it was struck. The entirety of the poem is based solely on onomatopoetic words relating to bells and the different sounds bells make depending on what material they are made out of. Poe uses different bells to represent different stages of life thus making the ability to describe the nuances of the sounds critical.…

Jack Madden: ARH 2000 Fall 2015 Reading Response Paper In the article, “The Trouble with (The Term) Art” by Carolyn Dean, a claim is made that the term art is inaccurately used to denote objects, specifically from cultures that predate western art. Dean uses specific examples such as Ancient American stone carving to get her point across. Because everyone differs from one another, each person’s opinions and interpretations of everyday events will vary based on how the information is perceived. These differences are especially noticed when reading and analyzing works of literature. Poems, for example, often lead to an audience with very different interpretations of the meaning being conveyed. Although Natasha Trethewey’s poem, “Artifact,” is a rather simply structured and straightforward poem, the connotations of the diction can cause a reader’s interpretation to be completely different than the poem’s intended meaning.…

In today’s culture and society, many people will most likely value an expensive car over an ancient artifact. In other words, artistic objects with valuable meanings are less appealing than exotic goods or products to the average person. The short story The Safe, written by Tim Gautreaux demonstrates a situation in which a few workers in a junkyard discover a safe with a fancy sewing machine inside of it. With the exception of one character, Alva, the rest of them find objects with physical value more appealing than ones with artistic and sentimental value. After being exposed to the sewing machine, Alva, Snyder, and Little Dickie develop their own sense of imagination and recognize the importance of sentimental value, which is exemplified…
