The home remedies she learned from her mother and grandmother was using senna, a home remedy form of laxative. Aloe Vera juice for rashes and skin breakouts and tea was used for colds and sore throats. School back in Guyana was heavily interdisciplinary based, she explained. School was more interdisciplinary based; we disciplined the children in class in addition to teaching them. She also explained that the classification of the students were different. In Guyana the elementary school was called primary school, middle school and high school was called secondary school and then the students advanced to college. When she came to America she had to relearn the terminology in order to teach. Masters program was everything she expected except for the price for higher education. Her advice to the younger generation is to pursue higher education and work hard for everything they want in life. Family is important, she explained, they should always look out for each other and help one another. Further, she explained that this generation is very individualistic and that they only think about themselves and the goals they are trying to accomplish. Two is better than one, she emphasized. The craziest thing the interviewee has ever done was steal a chicken for dinner. She laughed as she described the event. It was her and her two siblings, they were hungry and they did not have any food to eat at home, it was hard to feed a family of 13. So one day they went to their neighbor’s backyard and saw one of their chickens walking around. They took some rice and dropped it on the floor. The chicken came to eat the rice, and they grabbed the chicken by the neck, skinned the feathers and threw the chicken in a pot to cook. They hid the chicken in the community bathroom and had a tasty dinner to feed the entire family. Compared to her siblings, she was not the troublemaker, rather she ran away from trouble. Completing high school and learning how to speak French, like her father, was something she wished she had the opportunity to learn. She felt she missed out on some great opportunities growing up. A wife, mother, and grandmother were some of the titles she used to define herself. A woman who gives and demands respect, a peace maker, and the silent one in the family. The conversation flowed pretty well and she was attentive and she requested more questions, she enjoyed the Q&A. Completing this interview was very daunting for me because earlier in the semester my grandmother passed away. I felt like I had no one to interview, and I did not want to interview anyone because my grandmother was the ideal person I wanted to interview for this assignment. But the interviewee reminded me so much of my grandmother, the stories, the laughs, and the emphases on family. Her love for family and keeping in contact with family no matter the distance was important for her to pass down to the other generations to follow. According to Spector (2014), an individual who keeps in contact with family, extended and immediate, is an individual who yearns to maintain cultural consistency (p. 82).
