Mary is represented as icons, drawings, paintings, and apparitions, such as La Santa Muerte, La Negrita, Our Lady of the Rock, Madonna, The Virgin of Guadalupe, and Our Lady of the Wall. With there still being many more, all of this just undoubtedly proves how incredibly substantial her influence is. It is completely reasonable to believe in Mary’s influence because “to look at [her]…is to look at God’s original plan for humanity” (Nouwen, 1989), as mentioned in class: she is the ultimate standard—except not only just for women but for all Christians, “in her we see the way God wanted [Christians] to be” (Nouwen, 1989). Mary truly shows us the path to heaven with her unquestioned devotion to God, unwavering faith, and radical humility. In Christianity, Christians strive to become closer to God—to become perfect Christians—and Mary can help Christians do this, “the closer [Christians] come to Mary the better [they can] see the splendor of God’s redeemed humanity and the beauty of redeemed life” (Nouwen, 1989). If Mary is the ultimate standard and she can show us how to become closer with God then it makes complete sense that she can bring us hope as an extension of Christianity.
