The state of California has been decriminalizing marijuana since the mid-1990’s when it was permissible to be purchased marijuana with a doctor’s prescription. “Medical marijuana was decriminalized in 1996, allowing residents to buy it or grow it at home with an easy-to-get doctor’s recommendation.” (Staggs). On November 09, 2016 proposition 64 made the recreational use of marijuana legal in the state of California. The outcome of decriminalizing marijuana for recreational purposes has had an effect on the criminal justice system. In previous years the consequences of possessing marijuana for anything other than medical use resulted in criminal punishment from a misdemeanor to felony depending on the amount and intent of the marijuana.
