Selma, a film directed by Ava DuVernay shows us Dr. Martin Luther King’s success in fighting all who challenged him in order to give the African American people the right to vote. This film outlines the harsh three-month period of King’s (with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s help) struggle in an attempt to secure what he believes is a basic American right, the right to vote, against extremely violent white supremacist. This was all made much more difficult due to the fact that he demanded his protests be non-violent. Towards the end of the film, more Caucasian people that believed in his cause also joined the protests, the most notable one being the march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery. Finally, President Lyndon Johnson (the…

Bobo’s discussion of audience’s reactions to ‘Daughters of the Dust’ highlighted the significant difference to my own (Dash, 1991). I struggled with this film, it did not resonate and although I thought it was quite beautiful and because of that, mesmerising, I did not understand it. I found the dialect difficult to comprehend and the narrative, unfamiliar. I tried to decipher this text in two ways. Firstly, I attempted to take what I was seeing and place it within a context that I felt I better understood; one closer to home.…

Biographies have existed for centuries, in which they describe the life and story of a person who once lived. Normally, these are written in the form of a book. However, in today’s time, many are interpreted into a different form of media, in which several films nowadays are those of a biopic, a biographical film. “Straight Outta Compton” is a biopic from 2015 that talks about the career of the hip-hop artists of NWA, Niggas with Attitude- Ice Cube, Easy-E, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, and DJ Yella. In the Netflix original series Dear White People by Justin Simien is about a campus culture war between blacks and whites at a predominantly white Ivy League university, Winchester. This war comes to light when the staff of the humor magazine, Pastiche, stages an offensive Halloween party. This Halloween party was called “Dear Black People” which had white students in blackface and ended with the black students pissed off and shutting down the party. This film focuses on racial issues and culture identities in the perspective of a black social group on campus in the 21st century. Racism doesn’t always have to be a violent act against another person; it can be the way you engage with one another on a daily basis.…
Bubble, Melancholia, and Whitey were all released in day-and-date format, but that is not their only point of similarity. To begin, Bubble and Whitey both lack star studded casts. For Bubble this choice was likely made for two reasons; amateur actors gave a more authentic feel to the town about a small town, and it was an experimental film that did not need to specifically do well. Soderbergh had already been promised a contract for several additional films no matter the outcome of the first. This opened Bubble up for Magnolia and Cuban to experiment with its release with very few consequences.…
Telling the story of history is a very hard thing to do for a film maker. They must take a point in time that may have expanded the course of a year or more, and make it into a one and a half to two hour movie. For the movie to be as cohesive and interesting as possible, things have to be changed and added into the story. This was the situation in the movie American Gangster. This is about a Drug kingpin leader, Frank Lucas, and his road to leading the drug industry in the New york, Harlem area.…
Some whites don't use their power towards blacks but clearly show that they dislike blacks. The film shows a few scenes that define racism and power. About ten minutes into the film, two black guys were walking towards a politician and his wife and once the wife saw the black guys, she walked closer to her husband. The black guys then took their guns out and robbed the politician's…
Michelle Han Tran Professor Thibodaux ENG 1157 3 December 2015 White Chicks: Farce and Purposeful Revenge of the Whiteface Controversy? When many people hear of the Wayans Brothers movie White Chicks, they would inevitably picture the humorous scene where Terry Crews, being the physically huge, prideful jock he is, ironically does gestures and lip-syncs to Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” on his car radio. Everyone around me adores this particular movie with a passion, often quoting lines and reminiscing their favorite scenes. Moreover, White Chicks is and will forever be intact on our comedy list to watch on an ordinary Netflix night.…
