Unfavorable weather, sickness, low food supplies, and hostility from the natives hampered the settlement from the beginning. Near present day Beaufort along Port Royal Sound, a failed settlement attempt by the French took place in 1562 when Jean Ribault led a group of French Huguenots in search of religious freedom. When we consider memorializing an event or person in the form of a monument, no one would imagine it being gnawed away by rats. Certain shortfalls arise when contrasting these forgotten structures and, say, the often-visited monuments of the National Mall. We must mind these qualities if we wish to prevent its fall to obscurity. Foremost, whatever cause our memorial will commemorate, it must resound in the hearts of the people.…

[ IMG] If someone told me they wanted to make a cartoony, firefighting-themed roguelite with a jazz soundtrack, I’d probably think they’re a bit crazy. The small development studio, Laughing Jackal, managed to take these concepts and put them together in a wonderful game called Flame Over. The premise of the game is rather simple. You play as the appropriately-named firefighter, Blaze Carruthers, and run around various buildings trying to put out fires. Needless to say, the main goal is to extinguish all of the fires in the building.…

The emergence of building codes in the early 1900s further advance the elimination of conflagrations. The adoption of such codes strived to contain fires not only to a structure but eventually within the structure (Corbett & Brannigan, 2015). Tragic fires at the MGM Grand in 1980 and the Station Nightclub in 2003 led to more recent requirements for fire protection, including sprinkler systems, exit lighting and limits on explosives and pyrotechnics (Vaughan & Turner, 2013). Building and national fire code standards are evaluated, updated or changed every 3 years. The new changes are geared to improve life safety and fireground operations.…
