David Farragut was born on July 5, 1801 as James Farragut. His father was Jorge Farragut, who had served as a Spanish merchant captain in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He was sent to live with Captain David Porter, at which point he changed his name to David (“David G. Farragut”).
