There are three Chinese Philosophies in the ancient civilisation. Confucianism, Daoism, and legalism. I will tell you all about all three philosophies and how they work. The first one is Confucianism.…
Confucianism and Daoism: Comparing Primary Documents Based on the tenants each religious philosophy, Documents A and D represent the Confucian tradition and Documents B and C represent the Taoist tradition. Both traditions set forth major principles for living as an individual and within the community. Major topics include punishment, weapons, conflict, leading, virtue, and crime.…
The world is filled with conflicting forces and imbalances. For millennia, civilizations have repeatedly tried to explain the idea of opposite sides and how they affect the world in which they exist. For example, Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang symbols represent the idea of perfect balance and harmony in Chinese culture, demonstrating the polar forces that create and explain the world. Yin stands for femininity and passiveness, while Yang stands for masculinity and activeness, much like the characters of María and Gabriel Márez in Bless Me Ultima.…
Laozi feels that Yin and Yang represents human life because he said “human life is a whole made up of opposites” and that is what Yin and Yang is, a whole made up of opposites. Living a life full of happiness is also a big thing in teaching the way of Daoism. With all of these all of these beliefs, Laozi again felt that the best way to rule a society was to rule the least amount possible. As I said before, Daoism was by far the most laid back philosophy and I believe a very interesting one as…
The defining concept of his ideas is to not be a leader, but to be a guide. Bokenamp explains these ideas further, “Daoist religion is the Dao itself, understood in a particular way. The term dao, originally denoting a "way" or "path," came to be used in pre-Han philosophical discourse to refer to the…
Women only seem to appear if they have ever caused trouble. According to Confucianism women had to respond to the needs of their closely related men. Women also had to obey their husband and their grown sons. A lot of women did not have names. Women really had no legal rights.…
The word Tao means the “way” or the “path” and is believed to be the origin of the universe, the basis of the existence of all creatures, and the laws of development and change reigning all creatures. Daoism was founded around 550 B.C.E. This is a rough estimate because the first writings date back to 3rd or 4th centuries B.C.E. Some scholars claim Daoism was founded by a man named Lao-tzu, also spelled Laozi. Others disagree and claim that he wasn’t an actual historical person.…
It can be concluded, based on the writing of Mary Pat Fisher, Living Religions (2014), that, Confucianism and Daoism are opposites of each other. Both religions originate from China. Confucianism founded by Konq Qiu, is structured and is described as living a life of virtue. Daoism has no clear founder although credit is given to Laozi, is more care free and seeks to be one of nature and to live life as flowing water.…
Daoism and Confucianism are two antique Chinese approaches to existing. The former is based on the idea of harmonious and well-balanced living. The latter considers that it is necessary to set appropriate examples through five relationships, which are ruler and follower, older and younger relative, wife and husband, friend and friend, and father and son, for others to follow. Both these philosophies have some features of religion, but mostly they seem to oppose each other. Confucianism seems to be worldlier.…
We can trace the origin of Daoism, accordingly, in two ways. One is attitudinal, the other theoretical. The theoretical mark of Daoism is an interest in the meaning or nature of dao which may inform or encourage Daoist attitudes. In view of the…
The Way is mystical, magical, and perfect: a spiritual reality that eludes identification. Daoists reject a strong government because they believe people can control their own actions and do not need a ruler. Taoists have faith in preparation in advance and must carefully consider each action before taking it. A Taoist is kind to other individuals in part because kindness tends to be reciprocated. Taoists believe people are compassionate by nature and if left to their own devices they will show this compassion without expecting a reward.…
The Tao according to Smith has three meanings, the way of ultimate reality, the way of the universe and the way of human life (Smith 198-99). The Taoists believe that the Tao is the universe therefore and the universe is the equivalence of god and that people are the equal parts of this…
In this unit, I learned about the 3 teachings of China. They are Daoism(Taoism), Confucianism, and Buddhism. Taoism focused on health and harmony with nature. Taoism also believes that you cannot tell lies, steal, commit adultery, commit murder or drink alcohol. They also believe that they have to obey their elders, love their parents, be tolerant, help others act, stay in excellent physical and mental shape, practice self control of mind and body, and act without thinking of themselves, in other words act selflessly.…
Confucianism and Daoism complement one another by both focusing on following the Dao, a path that one should follow in life, but potentially conflict on the different ways the Dao can be carried out. These similarities and differences have a profound impact on the way both religions are carried out by their millions of followers. Confucianism and Daoism are similar in that they both believe in the Dao and the cultivation of one’s self to follow said path, as well as a strong sense of filial devotion. The differences of these two religions are their ideas about rituals, and the varying importance placed on the self and the community. The similarities between Confucian and Daoist teachings of the Dao as well as the cultivation of one’s self…
This Tao is very different to me, because it is something that even us at humans cannot even begin to understand. “The Tao Te Ching announces in its opening line that words are not equal to it: The Tao that can be spoken is not the true Tao” (Smith 198). In my mind, this means that no one really can grasp the whole meaning of Tao, so if someone were to try and explain it they would most likely be telling you a false acquisition of what Tao really is. The way of ultimate reality is also how we arise in the life and also to which all life falls. In this Tao this is unknown and is considered a mystery in the Tao Te Ching.…
