My research project topic looked into the effects of dangerous tackles in high-school rugby league, furthermore, it assessed how these tackles can either be banned or retraining take place within a school in order to reduce the risk of injury caused by dangerous tackling. The research processes I used included a variety of primary and secondary sources including surveys, interviews, internet research and personal experiences playing at club level. I chose to do an essay because it presented the arguments about tackling and what the school can do to improve the situation.
What I found out was that some tackles should be banned (such as the crusher and cannonball for example), that the person tackling others needs to be retrained and the people being tackled can also learn how to better protect themselves. If the school teaches students how to avoid injury, then full-contact rugby could be allowed at school. (WORD COUNT: 150) Evaluation of research processes Research Process 1: Interviewing a professional rugby player In order to complete my research to be perfect I surveyed a professional rugby player because they have the most experience in playing NRL and that is why I interviewed Keith Galloway from the Wests Tigers because even though he is now retired he provided me with the most information about the game. As he had been playing for 25 years, his experience certainly proved that the information he provided was extremely valid and relevant to the study. Keith gave me heaps of useful information that I was able to use to answer some of my guiding questions including the benefits of improving tackling techniques and furthermore, techniques on te-training that could benefit younger students in a school setting. Through talking with an expert, I learnt that all the best NRL players started at a really young age and learnt as kids to move their heads out of the way to avoid getting tackled in the most important part of the body. While talking with him, he mentioned suggestions on how schools can solve the dangerous tackling for junior issue; he said ‘Young players should just keep there head out of every tackle and keep the head up looking at the opposing player the whole time.’ The main disadvantage from using this process was that it was really hard to talk with others but I was lucky enough to speak with Keith Galloway, and on top of this, to get him to talk to me for 10 minutes. This source was really reliable because of the way that it gave me first-hand understanding of how kids should protect their heads in tackles. The information in this process supported all the other materials from books and online about keeping your head well clear at all times. The only limitation to this specific process was that I only had five to ten minutes with him, …show more content…
One of the disadvantages of using this process though was that it was the only book that I found, and although it did not directly contain any meaningful information about the dangers of tackling, the book was thorough on the realities and rules of tackling as it was written by NAME, the original rules creator of the game. The only limitation by using the book was that in some parts it was too in-depth for me too understand properly, however, again I was able to draw on my experience of the game and figure out the parts relevant to tackling, leaving the rest as I was on time …show more content…
This amazing opportunity helped to receive the answers I needed for the project, but his insights into making the game safer will allow many other kids like myself to continue playing the sport we love. Although time limited how much time I could spend with Galloway, I appreciated his insight and his information certainly improved the authenticity and validity of my findings.
Another challenge I had faced was the number of websites with decent information and this stopped me from having relevant and reliable opinions on the topic. Although it was a time consuming process to go through and see if the information was similar to the book I read and the conversation with Galloway, the extremely biased sites were obvious and I did not use most of these for my references.
