Daisy's Ambition In The Great Gatsby

When Jay Gatsby smiled, “It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life”(x). Gatsby was special because unlike everyone else he saw the best in people and had his own dreams. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald Nick moves to New York and is disgusted by everyone except Gatsby. While many of the people Nick meets in New York such as Daisy and Tom are shallow and have no goal other than themselves. Gatsby is different because he cares about people and has a dream he is working towards. Gatsby is exempt from the disgust Nick feels for everyone around him because he has ambition, dedication and optimism.

Gatsby believes in destiny. Gatsby works so hard to be with Daisy. Gatsby spent time with Dan Cody because he knew it would turn him into a gentleman. Gatsby stays dedicated because he knew this was the next step to reach his destiny. While Jordan talks to Gatsby she says“Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay”(x). Gatsby wanted to be across the bay so that she might come to one of his parties. Gatsby is willing to spend years to achieve his goals. He is so optimistic that he can’t see anything not going as planned. When Daisy clearly has decided to stay with Tom, Gatsby still believes they can run away. After the car crash Gatsby believes Daisy will run away with him. Despite the fact that Daisy chose Tom, Gatsby believes she will still leave him. Even on the next day he still believed she would call. Gatsby believed he could repeat the past. After his party with Daisy he says“Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!” (x). Against all odds, he believed that he could go back to when he first met Daisy. Gatsby could not see how much he was asking Daisy to give up for him. She did not want to give up her life but Gatsby is too optimistic to see it.
