Medical technology is a vast field where advancements in technology play a crucial part in sustaining the health of patients. Fields such as Artificial Intelligence, 3-D printing, robotics, and medical imaging have contributed to improving the health of many people. In the medical field, the dependence of medical technology has allowed doctors to improve their practice by making more accurate diagnoses, which reduces mortality rate. Healthcare practitioners, as a result of these innovations, can continue to expand the medical field. Technological innovations enhance quality of care of patients and sustain universal healthcare. During the 1800s, medical practitioners and scientists created instruments to examine and understand how the body works. These instruments include the thermometer, microscope, and stethoscope. These simple medical tools allowed doctors to diagnose and treat diseases. In the 1950s, there was a huge breakthrough in medicine because of the integration of computers in the medical field. It allowed healthcare workers to keep track of patient records more efficiently and the diagnostic tests were performed faster and more precisely than ever before. The integration of technology in medicine has allowed it to become more specialized, like the creation of Artificial Intelligence, 3-D printing, robotics, and medical imaging. Artificial Intelligence is a relatively new concept in the medical field that began with Watson. Watson is a supercomputer that has resurfaced as a diagnostic aid and can be used in a variety of different ways, such as, training medical students and managing the treatment of cancer. In the future, medical supercomputers should be capable of evaluating and analyzing a wide array of data, such as, a person’s symptoms, biometric data, diet, activity level, and entire genome. These improvements would greatly increase the productivity of healthcare practitioners globally. Artificial Intelligence in medicine would increase life expectancy, give a fast and accurate diagnosis, reduce human error, and minimize the need for invasive surgery. Another technology in the medical field is 3-D printing. Printing whole new organs for transplants, such as hearts, livers, and kidneys, has the potential to address the shortage of organ donations. Today, more than 120,000 people need organ transplants, but less than 10,000 have received the transplant needed. The idea of producing organs and tissues (biofabrication) can help those people that need the transplant. Also, these organs can be made with the patient’s own cells, which can lower the risk of rejection. 3-D printing …show more content…
These systems are, the da Vinci Surgical System, ZEUS Robotic Surgical System and AESOP Robotic System. In 2000, the US Food and Drug Administration permitted the da Vinci Surgical System as a tool in the operating room. This is the first robotic technology accepted in the United States of America. Although, the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System was only just recently accepted as a useable tool for surgery in the US, the da Vinci System performed the first successful robotically-assisted surgery in 1997 after assisting in a heart bypass surgery in Germany. Since then, the da Vinci Surgical System has performed over 20,000 operations in the US. The use of robotic technology in medicine would have an enormous impact in the medical field. There would be less infection, blood loss, and the use of anesthesia. Also, robotic surgery makes smaller incisions, which can reduce a patient’s pain.
