D-day was the foot hold the Allies needed to begin their slow march into Europe to take down Hitler's Regime. D-day was the start of the battle of Normandy, which was also given the Codename “Overlord”. D-day was one of the most important operations in Europe. It gave us a foothold in German occupied France. But there were also other factors going into the battle. The allies made a false army in the closest part on the canal between France and the U.K. They had blown up planes, Tanks and even fake soldiers in an attempt to trick the Germans into fortifying different parts of the beach. And prior to the attacks we sent airborne troops in to take bridges and roadways near Normandy to prevent more aid to the Germans. The day of the attack, we used LCM or also known as Land Craft, Mechanized. It could hold 100 troops and go 7 knots. The only problem was as some beaches the current threw them off and set them off course. Which causes many boats to land in the wrong landing zone. This caused mass confusion. The standard issues guns for Americans, which were used was the B.A.R, the M1 Garand, the M1 carbine, the Thompson Machine Gun, the 1911 and the 1903 Springfield. The reason we used June 6 is because this day because it was the best day they could get. The weather cleared up a little to make it easier to navigate, but still was very wavy. Another disadvantage the Allies troop experience was sea sickness. The morning of the navy feed them a huge breakfast since they would have a full stomach for combat. But this made sea sickness which causes people to get sick making them weaker for fighting. The soldiers who ate less were better off, and more likely survive what met them
