Culture can affect multiple aspects in a society and can shape a person. It can affect who they are and how they act during certain situations. In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Mr. Darcy, one of the main characters, goes through a lot of character changes and grows in personality and actions. Fitzwilliam Darcy is Mr. Bingley's best friend; he grew up at his estate in Pemberley and later his father took in Wickham. He is a very private man, and the way he was brought up highly affects his opinions of everyone around him. In the two dances there are a lot of cultural rules and actions that the reader can identify while reading the book. Pride and Prejudice takes place in the 19th century. During that time there was a social caste system and at the top were Lords and Ladies; that would be at the top of the social hierarchy, while being a maid or server would be at the bottom. Also location can affect a person's character and how they act. The way Mr. Darcy acts at his estate compared to he acts in Meryton. The comfort of home and the awareness of not knowing where everything is can take a toll on a person and their personality. In the book pride and prejudice, there are two ball scenes that show the social hierarchy and culture of the time. In the first ball dance it is more for everyone, no matter what rank in society they are. During the 1800s in London, England there was a social hierarchy that was part of their culture and way of life. On the top of the social hierarchy where is the Lords and Ladies and that can connect to the dance in Meryton the people think he is all stuck up and that he thinks he is better than everyone because his father was a Lord . Also at the dance, he was not talking to anyone but Bingley and he was not dancing with anybody. To the citizens of Meryton, he is a cold and rude person, but to family and others he is nice and kind. While talking to Mr. Bingley about the women there, he say “She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me” this shows that he thought she was not pretty enough and did not even think about it, he thinks he is all high in status compared to the because they are country folk. Moreover, the reader reads that when Mr. Darcy is away from his estate his whole personality does the 360 and acts completely cold and arrogant, but when he is home his personality completely changes and he acts like a good host. In Meryton, he does not express interest in the community and would act like he was better than them. Also when he is at his estate his manners or golden compared to when he was in Meryton and he is more open about his past and what had happened with Wickham to Elizabeth. That is because he is more comfortable where he is and does not feel the need to hide from his past.
