In the beginning of his presidency he was a very good leader making many reforms to improve cuban life while keeping the american plantation owners in cuba happy. However he became increasingly unpopular when he rigged elections to surround himself by army heads and political friends. One of these very unhappy people was fidel castro, a popular lawyer for the poor in Havana, he was running for office when batista took total control. Castro was so upset he started a movement against batista, The July 26th movement, he was eventually arrested and put on trial. He became even more popular after his arrest because he was able to use his lawyer skills and get out of the predicament. Before he was arrested again he fled to mexico city with his brother. In mexico city he met Che Guevara, a marxist revolutionary from argentina, these three would eventually lead the july 26th movement or the cuban revolution and overthrow batista. reforms by Castro which lead to embargo. This was intended to serve as a backup plan if the United States were to attack and provided the Soviet Union with the ability to strike back even harder. Unlike the before, the Soviet Union was able to destroy the majority of the U.S. with long range missiles located on Cuba.(INSERT SOURCE MENTIONING POWER OF MISSILES) The U.S. was very afraid of what could happen if Castro was able to gain total control of the missiles was able to launch them whenever he pleased. The main reason for this known fear was because Castro had a strong hate for the U.S. due to the Bay of Pigs, which was when the U.S. trained Cuban defectors to kill Castro.
