The Alchemist ( O’ Alquimista in Portuguese) is a famous novel that was written by a Brazilian novelist and lyricist, Paulo Coelho. It is about Santiago, a young shepherd and his journey to Egypt, after he had dream of finding treasure. It was entitled The Alchemist for it is about turning common or ordinary objects into something that value the most. When it says the Alchemist, it does not mean its literal meaning but it conveys or pointing out that all of us can turn something to everything if we wanted to achieve or to get that thing. Coelho is a recipient of numerous international awards, among them is the crystal award by the world economic forum. His book was first published in 1988. It is originally written in Portuguese and has been translated into at least 80 languages. It has sold 165 million copies worldwide, wow! What does an Alchemist do and why did they them “alchemist’ I thought that the alchemist will be the main character for it was entitled ‘The Alchemist’. Then, I was surprised to know that it was not the alchemist but Santiago. It is a very interesting book for me because you’ll never know on what will happen next and you’ll able to learn lot of things from it and it has some lessons in life. It is also memorable for the story really got my attention. It is very simple yet nice work that should all read. It also entertained me because it doesn’t focus only in one thing or one person. It went through a lot and goes to places where the main character meets someone new and shares their own story. I never got bored in the flow of the story.
