The criminal justice system has been developing and evolving forever seeking to shape and protect society since the inception of this country. I strongly agree with Cesare Becaria’s beliefs of how punishments should be swift, severe and certain to work. Crimes are more efficient at being prevented by the certainty than the severity of the sanctions. Becaria argued that the penalties that are swift and severe enough to offset the benefits of the crime effectively would better serve as a deterrent to future crimes and the legal system that’s currently in place (Paternoster, 2010). as out of control and often fueled by the distorted truths of the mainstream media and the false opinion based reporting of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Snap Chat. Interestingly enough, though the mainstream media has changed from only just reporting the “FACTS” to focusing more on how to say it to boost and create ratings to generate the maximum amount of revenue. The media no longer just gives the facts they put an interesting twist on most of the news and in doing so they appear to be biased. The mainstream media such as CNN looks to be a liberal opinion based network whereas Fox seems to be a bit more conservative, and all this is gathered just from watching the stories and ideas they broadcast. All in all, it’s no longer the News that’s reported just for information giving purposes. Not to mention the media and technology have changed the playing table of the press by allowing them to broadcast from just about anywhere in the world including the battlefield quickly, inexpensively and more efficiently. Mostly, every human being walking on the street with an ordinary smartphone can broadcast live from anywhere. Unfortunately, with the media and their profit goals has often distorts the truth on a lot of subjects that has caused the attitudes and opinions of the general public affecting all classes of people. The birth of “Black Lives Matter Movement” was born out of false reporting, fueled by mainstream media. What happened when Officer Darren Wilson feared for his life after Michael Brown attempted to take his gun in the patrol vehicle and failed to comply and advanced the officer a second time was an example of a senseless self-inflicted avoidable tragedy on the part of Michael Brown. As a police officer, we are trained not to lose on the street; a person needs to comply and if they don't like something complain directly.
