The first was seventeen, the age we started dating. The next was eight, the age of our oldest son, Spencer. Thirty-six was how old we were and fifty-nine was the name of our street. Twenty-five for the amount of letters in our children’s names: Spencer, Lydia, Matthew Lerner. And finally forty-four for the amount of animals we’d both owned over our entire lives (Aaron had grown up on a farm.) Aaron and I had never been obsessive lottery players, just occasionally dipping our foot into the pool when we felt like our luck was going well. We’d had fun choosing the numbers, figuring we didn’t have a chance in hell of winning. And then last night at 9:22, our lives changed forever when the Illinois Lottery named off all six numbers we had chosen. We nearly passed out in excitement before calling up one of Aaron’s old college buddies who was an attorney. That’s what the internet told us to do, anyway. We had a meeting with him scheduled for 1 this afternoon, which after looking at the clock on the wall…that was in fifty-seven
