Creative Writing: The Best Of America Is On The Blue Highways

Decent Essays
Rghhhhh!!! Ahh! That big rig tried to kill me. I do not like this. It is so scary. I see a sign that says "Route 66, next right." I slammed the gas pedal through the floor to get off the the ramp. I was so excited to go here. I read about it off of an article called " The Best of America is on the Blue Highways. " The article stated that on route 66 there are interesting places around every corner.

In the passage it also stated Jefferson City was the capital of highways. There are town shops, coffee shops, and little stores. These places are owned by the people of the small city. This is special because you can't see this no where else.

The earth beneath their feet had long since morphed into oozing, black mud that sucked at their feet and legs. The pounding of artillery shells, the booming of massive guns, the sharp crack of rifles, and the smell of gunpowder were without pause. Blood-splattered bodies were sprawled on the trenches. The screams of agony and the earth-shattering crashes of shells would be enough to drive even the most stalwart to insanity.…

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 1942 Steve sat quietly, hands tucked in his lap in the poorly-lit theater. For about 20 minutes, the white sheet had broadcasted war propaganda: little boys pulling dirty red wagons missing wheels, collecting scraps of metal for the war effort, soldiers hiding in ditches, clutching helmets to their heads and rifles to their chests, the sound of bombs exploding and tanks firing seemingly unnecessarily loud in Steve’s ears. A booming voice described the terrors soldiers faced in the battlefield, and it was so graphic and in so much detail that Steve felt he was there to fight with them. He almost forgot what he went there to see in the first place. Steve was mesmerized by the scene, like the way unwanted tears swell up in…

“No Man’s Land’ For about an hour that day, the battlefield was tranquil. Both sides anticipated the opponents’ next move, the next shell to be fired, the next gas attack, the next bullet to pierce the skull of a friend. The war had been nightmarish, seeming like it could never end and the fighting would never stop. William took this brief moment of standoff to think of his wife, Elizabeth, and their soon to be daughter, who had been carrying him for 4 months already. He reached into his uniform through the collar, fishing around for the stopwatch she had given him on their 1-year anniversary.…

The old man sat alone in his tin hut, staring at the hard dirt floor beneath his feet. It was all he had known for the past few years, ever since he became a Rat of Tobruk.
