“Odysseus! We’ve been sailing for days, we must find a place to stay!”
“Intruders!” Polyphemus said, “how dare they come onto my island! I must gather my foot power to stomp on these fools who decided to bare their scrawny human bodies onto my island! Brother Sam! I command you to stay on the lookout for any other people who dare to step foot onto my island.”
Polyphemus wandered through the bright green trees; each one springing at least 60 feet high. He got to his home filled with everything he needs to gain the power he needs to stomp on the humans and make them pay for what they have done. Polyphemus’s home was a giant cave filled with a place for him to sleep and bathe, places to eat and finally his foot stomping room. One special talent

“STOPP!” Bill screamed, it was been the first time he had ever yelled at someone in his entire life.
“Look. I understand you might have issues with humans but I don’t know what you have against them I mean what did they ever do to you? Polyphemus! Polyphemus?”
Bill looked around, when he realized everyone had left he lay back down on the sand and let the wave go back into the ocean.
Polyphemus, shocked and tired walked slowly back into his cave and collapsed on the floor while saying, “I will find them and crush them.”
The next morning Polyphemus woke up to the sound of low voices coming from the entrance of his cave.
“Who’s there!”
“Ahhhh,” Odysseus told him, “You must be the great Polyphemus.”
“We don't like humans here,” Polyphemus scolded, “I stomp on humans when I see them.”
“But why,” Odysseus responded a little nervous this time, “look how far we have come and shouldn’t we get a gift for comi . . .”

“Fine! I will have one glass of your wine just because I’m thirsty!” Polyphemus grunted.
Odysseus poured a glass of wine in one large glass and he gave in to Polyphemus. At first he was hesitant but let the wine go right into his mouth seconds later the glass was right in front of Odysseus’ face.
“MORE! GIVE ME MORE OF THE DELICIOUS WINE!”
Odysseus poured another glass of wine. Polyphemus asked for more; this kept going for an hour and once Polyphemus collapsed to the floor Odysseus decided to take action. He grabbed a long sharp spear of is and nailed it in Polyphemus’ eye. He then ran away with his men back to his ship.
Moments later Polyphemus woke up only able to see out of his left eye. He howled in pain as he took the spear out and called to his father for help.
“Son go into the ocean and put your eye in it,” Poseidon called. I will take care of the victims that would dare to hurt you that badly.”
“Thank you father,” Polyphemus responded.
Bill came into the cave. The both stared at eachother for what felt like five minutes. Until he broke the silence.

A giant, one-eyed Cyclops, who bashes the brains of Odysseus’ men, dismembers them, and then consumes every piece, sounds like a frightening monster. However, Polyphemos’ barbaric actions are not much different from Odysseus’ slaughter of the suitors later in the epic poem. Both Polyphemos and Odysseus are associated to acting like a mountain lion. Polyphemos catches two of Odysseus’ men, “beats their brains out, spattering the floor,” and devours the men, “gaping and crunching like a mountain lion” (9: 303, 305). Similarly, the old Nurse finds Odysseus, “spattered and caked with blood, like a mountain lion when he has gorged upon an ox” (22: 419-420).…

In the comedy epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not a good leader because his arrogance causes his crew members to pass away and the lack of trust from his crew makes him unable to control them. Odysseus’s arrogance leads to the death of his crew. For example, while Odysseus and his crew are approaching Scylla, Odysseus knows that six of the crew members paddling will die. However, he says, “I told them nothing, as they could do nothing”(ln 620-621). Odysseus is implying that, as they approach Scylla, she will devour six crew members alive.…

If Odysseus hadn’t settled on greeting Polyphemus, he wouldn’t have lost men and they wouldn’t have been trapped with no way out besides relocating the boulder. Suddenly, Odysseus thought of a plan to escape the cave where Polyphemus would remove the boulder, but wouldn’t be able to catch Odysseus and his men from escaping. Odysseus’ idea was to make Polyphemus blind, so he would move the boulder and not be able to catch Odysseus and his men. Odysseus’ plan succeeds by making a spike out of an olive tree, charring the spike, and launching it into Polyphemus’ eye. Polyphemus wakes up and yells that Nohbdy ruined…

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. Homer develops this assertion by pointing out Odysseus's heroic characteristics in the various trials that he faces. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…

Polyphemus, just like Eumaeus, lives in a remote location. However, Polyphemus has become uncivilized and barbarous, and therefore turned unhospitable. Upon their initial contact, Odysseus attempts to explain how hospitality works to the uncultured cyclops, saying “…We’re at your knees / in hopes of a warm welcome, even a guest gift, / the sort that hosts give strangers. That’s the custom. / Respect the gods, my friend.…

Many people have told me what makes an epic hero. Strength, courage, and achieving immortality. When I heard about all of these traits one person came to mind when they said them, Odysseus. Odysseus is a Greek soldier that fought in the war against the Trojans, and because of him, the Diomedes were victorious in the war. Yet, that wasn't the end for Odysseus, he and his men faced many challenges on their way back home.…

Human agency is demonstrated in Homer’s The Odyssey and Virgil’s The Aeneid through the story arcs of the characters of Odysseus and Aeneas. In the Odyssey, although Odysseus’ fate seems to be predetermined by the gods, it is actually influenced entirely by Odysseus’s own choices. In the Aeneid, however, Aeneas does not possess the same free will as Odysseus; his destiny is determined by the will of Zeus. Homer establishes the independence of the choices of mortals over the preordinations of the gods, while Virgil emphasizes the control the gods exercise over the fates of mortals.…
