Augusta Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace is best known as Ada Lovelace, a mathematician and the world’s first computer programmer. She was born on December 10, 1815 in Middlesex, England to wealthy, educated parents. Her father was the famous poet Lord George Gordon Byron and her mother was Anne Isabella Milbanke, who was well-educated and enjoyed mathematics and science. Ada was the only legitimate child of Lord Byron. However, she is said to have been abandoned her father and unfortunately, she did not have a good relationship with her mother. Although her relationship with her mother was not very affectionate, her mother is the one who encouraged her to get an education and to concentrate on mathematics and science. One of the reasons her mother insisted that she engaged in rigorous studies is that she believed it would prevent Ada from becoming temperamental, like her father. However, she did not have much to worry about because Augusta’s gift for mathematics and science was evident from an early age. She is said to have developed a design for a plane, or flying machine, by this age [3]. However, one year after starting her education, Ada became ill with a serious case of measles, which forced her to take a break from her studies. Fortunately, in 1830, when Ada was 15 years old and feeling better, she met Mary Somerville, who was one of the best female mathematicians of her time and later, Ada’s mentor. Until Ada’s death, Somerville encouraged and supported Ada’s education by introducing her to advanced mathematics problems, complex ideas and to other well-known mathematicians and scientists, such as Charles
