Counselor Training Report

The training programs for counselors are usually located within the education department. This is because counselors have a focus in educating there clients. The primary focus within the degree is teaching graduate students counseling skills. It also has a focus in other aspects such as assessments, multicultural counseling, and career counseling that all work together to help strengthen a student’s counseling skills.
The Council for Accreditation of Counseling Education Program (CACREP) is the organization that is set forward to set standards for both master and doctor degrees. Under these standards A CACREP- accredited university require students to have at least complete two years or 48 or 60 hours of study. Students are also required to have 100 hours at practicum and 600 hours at an internship. The CACREP also sets forth other guidelines that state the facility must also be counselors.

A state license can be required before an individual is allowed to practice counseling and depending on which state your practice can determine how you are referred. Counselors who are licensed by the state can either be known as either licensed, certified or even registered and these terms are often used interchangeably. The requirements to become licensed by the state tends to vary from 30-60 hours of graduate course work along with 1-3 years of post-graduate supervision. An individual can also hold a credential through state agency certification. This occurs when a state agency determines that an individual is qualified to hold a particular state job. This process is most common for school counselors where the department of education makes the determination which counselors can be considered school counselors.
