The increasing sectional tension between the north and south was the biggest reason for the civil war. The biggest issue that separated the north and south was the slavery issue. Every time a compromise was made to fix things both sides had to keep giving things up, and they were sick of it. All this built up anger finally showed itself during “Bleeding Kansas.” Bleeding Kansas was a time when proslavery and antislavery people rushed into Missouri to vote for, or against slavery in the new state. The Crittenden Compromise was a last minute effort to try to bring the south back into the union. However, this compromise had nothing in it for the north, so it wasn’t even voted on. Some might say that this is the reason the war could have been avoided, that the north should have accepted and that it would’ve saved the union. However, they are wrong because this would make things even worse. The compromise did nothing to help the north and it would just drive them apart even more.
