Classical authors are able to hold a mirror up to western society, providing a salutary reminder and reflection on the essential truths we face about ourselves. The two texts convey and expose a deeper understanding into today’s society and our lives. The first text ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell exposes the themes of corruption, determination and power through the personification of farm animals, as an allegorical fable representing communist Russia during the early 20th century. While Ernest Hemingway, the author of ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ is able to reveal a deeper understanding into being honourable in defeat, pride and determination through an unexpected encounter with a prize-winning fish. The old man, who has not seen a successful catch in 84 days, was low in hope and determination, as seen in the following quote. ‘He hit the shark without hope but with resolution’ this quote demonstrates his complete loss of hope, however through his resolution, he was committed to continue on the trip. This experience can be easily linked to our modern society through the hope of asylum seekers on their journey to freedom. The motive for power can easily be seen in the character of Napoleon, who represents Joseph Stalin. Napoleon abuses power, and by using his secret police, his dominance is set on the farm. The line ‘There was only one candidate, Napoleon, who was elected unanimously’ shows the corruption of power found upon Animal Farm, and the allegorical rise to power, of which Stalin and Napoleon took to achieve a higher political status in their respective parties. This greed and drive for power is the true downfall of Animal Farm, and directly relates to a modern society, as seen in current political and military praffairs in the Middle East.
