Epilogue
Despite a worldwide manhunt, the Cook County DA was never able to bring Jack Purdy to justice. Maggie Bottomly was eventually reelected and served another four years as Cook County Sheriff. Her dreams of going to Washington never materialized after Richard Sawyer pulled his financial support. As for Deputy Sheriff Remington, he never served day one as Cook County Sheriff, having been defeated by ex-Sheriff Stan Baca four-years later in a runoff election. To this day, Bottomly has no idea that her deputy was the one leaking information to the press.
After Bottomly’s reelection, James Holmes pulled his financial support. Now appointed US Ambassador to Greece by President Chapman, James and Carla soon left Chicago for Athens. Three years later, he came under federal indictment when the FBI discovered he was using his private email server to conduct classified government business.

I never heard of it.” Promoted to lieutenant, Ed Canfield is now in charge of the department’s narcotics division. Lieutenant Andrew Riley retired, his career cut short by Bottomly. When security guard Lance Milligan was caught trying to break into Amanda Sawyer’s abandoned apartment, he was fired on the spot. His law enforcement career in tatters, he soon left Chicago for points west. Max Ripon, his ex-supervisor, hasn’t heard from him in over a year.
