Assignment Two With the establishment of a powerful two-party political system in the United States, the Democrats and Republicans – there are vital differences between the two which distinguish one from another and are founded on very powerful beliefs. Both political parties are beneficial to the United States in their own way, and both also have their downfalls. Examples of some different beliefs the two parties have are on tax policy, social issues, labor and free trade, education, and health care. Although the Democratic Party is the world’s oldest existing political party, I tend to lean towards the Conservative party for two reasons. One, being that I agree with the party more than with the liberal party, and two, most issues I find important are equally as important to the party. An issue which is important to me is tax reduction. The conservative party supports the reduction of tax, and that issue is a wide debate going on today. This party believes that budget surpluses have caused Americans to be overtaxed – a condition that is not only threatening our financial prosperity, but along with that, it is hindering growth to the country’s economy (Republicanviews.org). I could not agree more with their philosophy about this, and it is essential that we Americans find a way to promote lower taxes and in order to do that we need to take action and all come together as one on an agreeance. On the contrary, the Democratic Party believes the complete opposite of tax reduction, and has the economic idea of higher tax rates for higher income brackets, which means their stance on taxes is Progressive (high income earners should be taxed at a higher rate (Diffen.com)).

The primary reason for the tax policy that the Democratic Party supports is for raising certain taxes to provide for government spending, but in the big picture, the only thing it is achieving is hurting our economic growth. The conservative party has the idea that lower taxes create more incentives for people to work, save, invest, and engage in entrepreneurial endeavors. In reality, that is exactly what lowering taxes does. It is beneficial to our economy and encourages work and independence to all of the United States citizens. Although these two political parties dominate America’s political landscape, they differ greatly in their philosophies and ideals. Another issue that is extremely important to me and aids in the reason why I lean towards the right-leaning party would be education. Conservatives believe in a restructuring of higher education, leaving more students fully equipped for their desired fields and less working minimum wage jobs that are completely irrelevant to their education (Republicanviews.org). I am going through that exact situation right now and it is a tough battle because I would much rather be focused on my education and providing myself with the adequate knowledge I need to obtain my degree, but instead I have a job that has ultimately no connection what so ever with the education and degree I am planning to obtain. There is a certain type of republicanism that I fall towards, and that would be Fiscal Conservatism, which is the economic philosophy of prudence in government spending and debt, arguing that a government does not have the right to run up large debts and then throw the burden on the taxpayer (Philosophybasics.com). Since tax and education are two big issues for both political parties, it is essential in knowing which side you agree with.
