The CIA has been involved in heroin trafficking from the Turkey-Marseille’s connection to the Asian Connection in the early 1950’s to the 1970’s. But the CIA was mostly noted for their involvement in the cocaine epidemic in 1980’s.

Before I write about the cocaine epidemic of the 1980’s. We should look at the involvement of the CIA in earlier drug rings. In Southeast Asia during the 1950’s the CIA wanted to overthrow the new Communist China so they started and funded the Nationalist Chinese army to start a war. The Nationalist Chinese army then became a part of the Golden Triangle as opium

The very mention of drugs summons demonic images: needles, babies addicted at birth, violence. No issue generates such a visceral reaction in people like the topic of drugs. In Mike Gray’s book “Drug Crazy: How We Got Into This Mess and How We Can Get Out,” his analysis of the drug war in America explores the mass hysteria surrounding addiction that was nourished with misinformation. Based on the history Gray has compiled, coupled with modern studies, the drug war appears to be a lost cause, now and into the foreseeable future. In 1909, Dr. Hamilton Wright was appointed as the third U.S delegate to the International Opium Commission at Shanghai and became “personally responsible for shaping the international narcotics laws as we know them today.”…

“Traffickers often hide drugs among legitimate cargo in maritime containers, a fraction of which are inspected. Analysis of commercial maritime seizure data for 2004 through 2009 indicates that cocaine and marijuana are most often smuggled in commercial maritime vessels from Caribbean locations, such as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Jamaica, into East Coast ports in Florida and New Jersey. Traffickers also use commercial vessels to smuggle cocaine from the Dominican Republic into Puerto Rico. Smaller amounts of heroin, typically 2 kilograms or less, are occasionally smuggled by cruise ship passengers working for Caribbean trafficking organizations into East Coast ports; however, this smuggling technique appears to have declined since 2006. Seizure data indicate that methamphetamine is rarely smuggled into the United States on commercial maritime vessels” (United States Department of Justice).…

Outside activist groups, though sometimes anti-Reagan, provided an alternative to his myth. Americas Watch Report published a write up on the state of human rights in Nicaragua in 1985 that painted a different picture then the one Reagan painted. While this group was aligned against Reagan, this perspective is still important as it allow us to understand that the truth was likely somewhere in between this and what Reagan was saying. The main message of this document was that the Sandinista government was improving considerably. The group reported that ““The government of Nicaragua has in fact prosecuted security agents and soldiers for human rights abuses… something which has not occurred in El Salvador, Guatemala, or any other military-run…
