Additionally, all patients should be considered a partner in their care because the medical staff is not with them when they walk out the door. The medical staff can suggest how to improve the patient, but ultimately it is the effort from the patient that decides if the health improves. I understand that there is the mentally challenged population, but even they can help participate in their own way. Granted, some of the population has the mentality of a 1 year old, but most of them can participate in their own way. I would not be so quick to write them off as not being able to participate in their own health, but family should help them. However, if no family is available then the nurses should try to help them take care of their health. If it were not for the patient being alive, then the nurse would not have their job.
