The Internet is currently a very hot topic and has been for quite a while among many professionals. Some believe that it is helping humans become more advanced and bettering humanity. But, is it possible that google is truly creating a less intelligent human being? Nicholas Carr thinks so, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas carr uses an example of when Friedrich Nietzsch bought a typewriter. This is showing how even before google, new technology was changing people and their thought process. This example is prominent in showing that technology is a substitute for contemplation. I agree with Carr’s argument, that contemplation is being thrown away and how the “idea” or “definition” of being smart has changed over time. My generation does not simply care about how we got the answer or what the answer means, we just want results. In the reading, “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” by Nicolas Carr, he used an example about how a typewriter helped Friedrich Nietzsche regain the ability to write without pain again. …show more content…
This did come at a price though, Nietzsche’s style of writing changed. Nietzsche did not notice the change until one of his friends wrote him a letter. The letter said how his writing has become more “telegraphic and tighter.” Once Nietzsche received this letter he soon wrote back, “our writing equipment takes part in the forming of our thoughts.” So, Nietzsche did agree with his friend. Nietzsche went even further to say his writing style, “changed from arguments to aphorisms, from thoughts to puns, from rhetoric to telegram style.” When Nicolas Carr used this example of Nietzsche and the typewriter I came to the conclusion that even before the internet new technology has changed the way humans processed things. When Nietzsche Says, his writing changed from “arguments to aphorisms.” This means that his writing had nothing to back it up there were no solid facts behind his writing, there were just broad statements and ideas. Nietzsche then goes to say his writing changed “from Thoughts to puns.” This is showing how his writing went from deeply thought out plans to just scribbling down whatever came to him. The process to his writing slowly dissolved until there was no process, all thanks to his new fancy typewriter. Finally, Nietzsche last comment was his writing went “from rhetoric to telegram style.” He is saying he lost his art of word play when he says this. There is no more wow factor to his writing. Instead of taking you on a journey with words describing all of the beautiful scenery he just gets you from point A to B with not inspiration or attention to detail in his words. This example of the type writer and how it affected Nietzsche was is major example in the reading “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” because it is showing how the effect of technology on humans isn’t just happening now it was happening in the late 1800’s and even before that. Technology has been changing us for better or worse even if we don’t realize it. The reason we have technology is to solve a problem or to make our lives easier, but what we don’t realize is once we
