Constructed Response
The Chinese zodiac “十二生肖” is lunar cycle with one of twelve animals-rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and boar-corresponding to each year. The Chinese calendar starts on February 1st instead of January 1st. It is believed that four thousand years ago, the Chinese created the system. Another theory is that they divided a 24-hour day into twelve periods, “with the first period starting from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.” (Chinese Link 60), and each animal would be most active during one of them. It is believed people who are born under the same animal have the same characteristics with that animal. Chinese people will ask for a person’s animal sign in order to determine their age and personality traits. Superstitious couples will marry if their animal signs are compatible and plan pregnancies so their child will be born a certain year. The Chinese Zodiac plays an important role in Chinese culture.

The horse’s characteristics are social, competitive, and stubborn. People of the horse are energetic and desire independence. I think these traits fit me well. Another animal that suits me is the dragon, who’s traits are flamboyant, lucky, and imaginative. I believe people prefer having their traits listed to them instead of discovering them. Generally, people like to have labels so they can be set apart from others while also finding others like themselves. I believe that is the reason personality quizzes and horoscopes are so popular. People who desire to be married to a compatible zodiac sign want a system to verify that their spouse is the right match. They would rather depend on a system because it is

The king appointed local governors, and there was an established class of nobles as well as the masses, whose chief labour was in agriculture. The king issued pronouncements as to when to plant crops, and the society had a highly developed calendar system with a 360-day year of 12 months of 30 days each. It was during the Shang that Chinese writing began to develop, and the symbol for “moon” was—as it has remained—that also for “month.” The calendar took cognizance of both lunar and solar cycles, and, when it became necessary to adjust the basically lunar year to the seasonal reality of the solar year, intercalary months were added. The Shang Dynasty marked the middle of China’s Bronze Age and was a dynasty that made great contributions to Chinese civilization.…

Divine Thirteen: The Sacred Aztec Number Throughout the world, the number thirteen is fraught with varying degrees of superstition. In most cultures today, the number is seen as an ill omen meant to be avoided. Rarely will the number ever be considered lucky or have a positive connotation. In the time of the Aztec Empire in the Valley of Mexico (1318 C.E. – 1524 C.E), however, thirteen was a sacred number that reflected the beliefs of the Aztec people; not only was it symbolic for the empire’s celestial heavens, but it also played a key role in the Aztec ritual calendar and throughout the empire’s history.…

The article Stop Stereotyping Dogs written by Clive Wynne and Lisa Gunter argues that breed type has no correlation with behavior, for a dogs’ personality comes from “genetic and environmental influence” (Wynne and Gunter). However, Wynne and Gunter argue that breed type influences people, for example an animal shelter in Florida removed all breed specifications from their kennels, and the adoption of Pitbull’s went up by 75 percent. Even more, Wynne and Gunter tested the accuracy of “shelters breeding assignments”, and found that “only 12 percent were purebreds or a straight mix of two breeds. …staff only correctly identified all the breeds in a dog’s makeup in just a 10th of their animals”. Interestingly, Wynne and Gunter also found that…

She told me that I was a snake, and I, naive at the time, didn’t understand why. She explained to me that the zodiac system in China, shengxiao, was a running cycle of twelve years. The year that I was born in, 2001, just happened to be the year of the snake. I thought that snakes were scary and ruthless: not a great representation of who I am.…

Claims / Assumptions / Evidence Astrology attempts to explain the role of celestial bodies and their qualities to create a synthesis, thus allowing astrologists to present a complete picture of people and their potential. Planets’ qualities consist of the signs, and elements which are fire, air, water, and earth. The primary claim being made by believers of astrology is that mankind is affected not only by the traits we inherit and the environment in which we are raised, but also by the condition of our solar system in the moment that an individual is born. The sun, the moon and the eight planets are considered to be basic life-forces, meaning that they are viewed as tools to live by as well as the basis of our very substance.…

As with most societies, unfortunately, the answer to what makes an American is not that simple, as shown in American Born Chinese. Throughout this graphic novel, Jin, the protagonist, struggles with the questions of what it means to be an American, what it means to be Chinese, and how the two identities intertwine and compete.
