Everyone handles fear a little differently, but every example has one thing in common: it degrades trust. People start to turn against each other for their own personal interests. Survival mode sets in once a pandemic begins. The lack of answers creates often false assumptions and people begin to fill in the blanks. Conspiracy theories begin to formulate, and all order begins to disintegrate. Conspiracy theories tend to cause civil unrest and even large scale protests as displayed in the film “Contagion”. These gatherings of people only provide easier transmission routes and that quickly becomes recognized, which adds to the fear factor. This causes people to remain indoors, again increasing paranoia. People also choose to remain indoors to take care of their loved ones. Most people tend have protective feelings associated with the ones closest to them. This causes the psychological need for mothers to care for their sick child, the need for a husband to lie by the side of his sick wife, etc. These protective impulses typically require close proximity and even physical contact. As great as it seems to stand by the people that you love through better or worse, it can be equally as dangerous. Weather you contract this virus from taking care of a loved one or not, odds are you may have to watch them suffer. In most cases, the infected individual isn’t the only one suffering.
