In 1960, the first Republican president was elected, Abraham Lincoln. When the Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 presidential election, the southerners fear that slavery would be abolished reached its highest peak. Although Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery, he said he would not interfere with where it currently existed. However, it wasn’t enough to calm the southerner’s fears. South Carolina threatened that the state would secede, meaning they would leave the Union. However, “South Carolina had threatened to do this before in the 1830s during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, over a tariff that benefited Northern manufacturers but increased the cost of goods in the South.”(Causes of the Civil War) In 1860, South Carolinas senators resigned, with the legislature creating an ordnance stating “"The union now subsisting between South Carolina and other States, under the name of 'The United States of America, ' is hereby dissolved."(The South Secedes) South Caroline had seceded from the other states. The Reconstruction faced many challenges, but had good outcomes too. After the Civil War ended, slavery ended. African Americans for the first time could enjoy their own freedom, and with amendments of the constitution being redefined, they gained citizenship as well. Of course the south did not like that blacks were being treated as equals to whites, they dealt with it. Blacks were becoming part of the government for the first time in history, becoming officers, etc. The war changed American society and politics because blacks were free and were no longer forced to work under a white man for free. However, there were certain challenges, such as white men fining their black workers and cutting their wages for whatever reason they wanted. America was still in the right direction for
