Conformity In The Lottery

Conformity. Conformity is following the rules and the normal way of acting in society. Examples of conformity can be shown in The Lottery and many other articles. Although conformity is following the rules, it still may cause danger in today’s society. It can cause many crimes and reactions that normally wouldn’t be produced or acted upon. It is a negative thing because is causes reasons of deaths, importance of likes, and unexpectedness of actions. First, conformity is a negative thing because it causes deaths. Many things may cause death, but this is one of the reasonings. Some may believe conformity helps save people, they are wrong. For example, in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, they had this tradition. Some people may believe likes are based off people actually liking the picture, but, that isn't always the case. “ likes appear to be somewhat intoxicating to teenagers.” (Well Blogs) This quote shows how dangerous likes really are. Conformity transforms teens’ minds into only doing what is normal for society. That leads to them worrying about how many followers they have and how many likes they get. “When the youngsters viewed images that had a lot of likes, there was greater activity in neural regions of the brain… compared with neural reactions when the teens looked at photos with fewer likes.” (Well Blogs) This quote also shows conformity. It shows how teens are more blinded by how many likes someone’s photo gets that it attracts their attention into also liking it. When someone has a low amount of likes, less people are to like that picture because not many other people
