Social Classes: Our Greatest Setback

Social Classes: Our Greatest Setback Growing up you get asked what you want to be when you grow up. You are told that you can be anything, an astronaut, NBA star or even President of the United States. You are told with hard work, anything is possible but is that really true? The prophet Jesus once said to love your neighbor for everyone is made in his image. How many people actually love their neighbor. People tend to judge others on their place in the social class system. Why is this? What social class you belong to and interacting between two different social classes may cause conflict. Before diving deeper into this subject, we must define conflict. Conflict Theory is defined by The Real World: An Introduction to Sociology as “a paradigm …show more content…
I saw this woman who appeared to be around 5ft 4in and African American. The first thing I noticed was the undesirable clothing she was wearing tight spandex on her pants yet she was very overweight so it looked kind of nasty. She was also wearing a red t-shirt that looked a little too tight on her. She had 5 kinds around her all under the age of about 8. Her hair was short and red. It looked like a wig. She was having a hard time controlling her kids for they were being loud and disruptive. She has no jewelry or tattoos that I could see. She walked with a waddle kind of like a penguin for she was very overweight. I followed her out and acted like I was going to my car. She had a late 1990s GMC Jimmy. It was green and was very rusty and looked like it was not being taken care of. I immediately thought that this woman was lower middle class/ lower class and below the poverty line. She just looked like a mess. I felt sorry for …show more content…
I went to Saint Thomas Academy for high school. A very elite school with a lot of upper class. Many times, my friends and classmates would bash many public schools like South Saint Paul and Sibley, mainly for fun and a rivalry but sometimes because they thought that public schools were below STA. A sense of entitlement grows on you at STA. STA is also a Catholic school. We had mass for almost every event. Talking about Jesus giving to the poor, etc. Many Republicans that I know talk about the lower class as peasants. Lower Class people are told that they are lazy and don’t want to work their way into the middle class. Based on what I saw with the African American women at Target, I can see why people accuse the lower class of being lazy. Nothing against lower class people but when you dress dirty and have no care for how you look and don’t take care of your car, people are only going to think negatively. It is up to you to change that but you cant do it all by yourself. People being forced to help the poor through government programs like welfare causes conflict. It is a latent function. A latent function is “the less obvious, perhaps unintended functions of a social structure” (Ferris 24). The prophet Jesus once said to love your neighbor for everyone is made in his image. How many people actually love their neighbor. People tend to judge others on their place in the social class

Social class in America is an uncomfortable subject for many Americans; most believe that America is an essentially middle-class nation, however, author Gregory Mantsios argues otherwise. In this article, I will break apart “Class in America-2012” and explain how it creates a persuasive effect on readers. Mantsios accomplishes this effect by debunking popular myths through statistical evidence and providing real-life examples. This analysis will only provide the author’s opinions, and not my own, as to remain objective and fair throughout. Is the social class divide in America as large as most Americans think?…

Gregory Mantsios in the “Class in America” explains how Americans do not appreciate and tolerate when others talk about class differences, not realizing through each negative criticism impacts the people. Mantsios points out that Americans find it useless in discussing where people falls under the class structures of society. Mantsios is right, my generation are always in a constant battle of who is better. From the stare downs, the looks from bottom up and vice versa. Even in a cultural sense for example Haitian.…

Society is divided into three major categories of people; poor, middle class, and wealthy or rich. These categories asses the population of the United States based on their income. Many benefits, such as food or heat assistance, taxes, loans, etc. are based on these categories. These categories also allow for criticism from others around us, whom may or may not be categorized similarly. In the book Hand to Mouth: Living in Bootstrap America, the author, Linda Tirado discusses her experiences as a part of the poor America and also her thoughts and opinions on the rich, upper class.…

The people who get to see this first hand are obviously the lower class society, but the media might be able to let these situations be known as well. In Mantsios essay, he says that the United States has certain myths when it comes to dividing each social class. He shows the readers how everyone tries to hide all of the differences from each class. Mantsios gives us an example when he says, “when politicians and social commentators draw attention to the plight of the poor, they do so in a manner that obscures the class structure and denies any sense of exploitation” (379). He tries to tell us that the United States as a whole tries to not belittle anyone because of their income and that we are never trying to make anyone feel bad or discourage anyone in regards to their social class.…

The democratic society’s goal is to fulfill equal freedom for all, but the reality of the situations threatens that fact with the presence of corruption, poverty, and the discrepancy of power between the classes. In the novel Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the imbalance of power within the totalitarian government controlled caste system exposes the exploitative nature of society, by constructing a stark difference in the classes; to illustrate the struggle of the underprivileged beneath the power of a society concreted in the ideology of capitalist totalitarian. The Caste system within the World state creates a distinct difference in the people, allowing an oppressive drawback for the lower classes. In the World State the Castes…

Coming from my position in life, I often find challenge in analyzing, interpreting, and discussing social class. It weighs on me that I likely bring unfair biases and predispositions to this topic. I am a white, American, educated, athletic male from a family with both parents still together and without many financial troubles. Aside from perhaps a degree from a prestigious University or boat loads of cash, I do not think that I could be more privileged. Although my privilege might sway my ideas on the matter of social class, I am working to remove these biases in order to truly recognize the ways in which the social construct of social class influences the individuals, communities, and institutions that I come in contact with in everyday life.…

Social classes and race are some of the main factors of how people treat each other. People in the upper class look at the lower class as poor and violent criminals. People also associate some races as being poor and criminals. John McTiernan 's "Die Hard" is a marvelous example of how Social Class can alter the way one treats another. The main character, John McClane, is a very skilled Policeman who receives an average income.…

Today lower class citizens are discriminated and put down because they are not as rich as other people and cannot afford what others can, leading to a feeling of envy and doubt. In Kathleen Parker’s column for The Washington Post she stated, “As we begin yet another year, it is less easy to summon the dream. Instead of hope, a word that brought us a new president, we have entered an era of envy and doubt.” (Source D) Instead of having hope and drive to do the next best thing people pay attention to superficial and…

Hazaras are only one of the many groups of people that suffer from classism. It shocked me that despite everything they have been through, that they still face discrimination and oppression. I always thought of classism as more of an issue of the past.…

The culture has been unfairly divided for centuries, including by race, social class and social status. Sociologist, Max Weber implied that individuals ought to be arranged in society by using certain factors. Not to mention there are a number of social classes, each of them consisting of distinctive characteristics. Family structures and neighborhoods are affected in both good and bad ways by these social classes. The social class inequality are perceived differently by the three theoretical paradigms.…

As we get older we assume that we get a say on how we want to live our own life. If that’s the case, then why are few rich and successful, whereas the majority are suffering and are impoverished? In a sense we are all human beings therefore we should all be treated in an equal manner and be given equal opportunities in life. Reality however is a killer for we find that society, which was initially used as a survival technique by earliest ancestors, has more of a say in our lives then we do ourselves.…
