One of the popular tales is the story of “sleeping beauty” originally known as briar rose, which was published by the Grimm brothers. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were popular for their fairy tales including briar rose and lily and the lion; they also contributed to the study of different languages. Jacob was born in the year 1785 and died in the year 1863, while Wilhelm was born in the year 1786 and dies in the year 1859 (Holtze). Unlike Grimm’s briar rose, maleficent gave a depth explanation on why the villain was evil; therefore, audiences were urged to known why a character was presented as either bad or good. From the movie, Maleficent could have grown up as a very nice lady if she was not betrayed by Stephen; this explains normal human behavior. No one is born good or bad; situations, experiences, observations are the factors that determine how a person behaves. Maleficent was nice from the beginning, but Stephen betrayal turned her in to an evil person, besides, she repented after princess aurora showed her love; this shows that an evil person can change, if given a second chance. One moral lesson learnt from the movie but not from the original story is that anger, betrayal, and love could change a person’s …show more content…
In the Grimm’s briar rose, the princess had to wait for 100 years for a strong princes to come to her rescue (Jacob and Wilhelm), whereas, maleficent proved that women do not have to depend on men for liberation. Also, in maleficent, Stephen deceived maleficent it a kiss, she slept next to him because she trusted him, but in return, he took her main source of power for his selfish interest. This reveal how men take advantage of women and give no regard or whatsoever to women. Lastly, in the past, even till now, people describe women as men’s property. In the Grimm’s briar rose, the prince got married to the prince because he save her. What sort of thing is that? Women are not prizes for brave man. Upon reading The Epic of Gilgamesh and Antigone by Sophocles were able to draw a connection in the way both of these pieces view women in society. Both pieces show, women were once seen as frail beings that should stay in their places and be brought out just to please men. Fortunately, we as a society have come far in terms of women being viewed as more equal to men than in the late B.C. times but that does not mean women are finished gaining the same rights that men have. During The Epic of Gilgamesh , we can see that the place of women in society is seen as less than men 's but not completely viewed as a nonentity in ancient Mesopotamia. The civilization sees women 's place as just the bearers of life: we see that with the prostitute…

The Roles and Values of Women Can you imagine being a woman in a society that was not valued for the tasks she completed or her role in society? Imagine men in society being looked as more valued individuals. In the translation of the epic poem Beowulf, by Seamus Heaney, women are objectified by men and only valued if they were good servants to men during the Anglo-Saxon time period, this lifestyle shows the cultural norms of valuing servitude, obedience, and acquiescence. Women are looked at as inferior to men and are used as servants to preform scandalous tasks in order to please men. In Beowulf, an epic hero is greatly honored and preforms many dangerous tasks while other men have failed.…

Brian Yolen introduces Briar Rose--her version of the Sleeping Beauty which contains differences when compared to both the Grimm and Perrault versions, a clear and unarguable distinguish is the method that that story is presented. So far on my reading, Yolen introduces altered elements found in versions read last week, for example, Yolen states in her version that Sleeping Beauty falls asleep at the age of seventeen; meanwhile in Grimm and Perrault versions states that the princess falls asleep around the age of fifteen or sixteen. The age difference is not a big dissimilarity, yet it highlights a point that versions can change over time. In the long run, a story may have different, or changed elements because it has been passed generations.…

Throughout history, the male has been the most dominant figure living on planet Earth. Difficult tasks and jobs have been given to men, and women were given simpler, less demanding jobs. Women often were thought of as weak and fragile so they could not do the tasks of men; who were pictured as muscular and intelligent. Women were not given equal rights to men but in World War I and World War II, the government and society ran into a problem, and women were able to prove themselves as strong, unique, and skilled. Even today, after decades of for equal rights, many women still play and are viewed as this stereotypical role, and as a result woman have relentlessly attempted to strive away from it. In innumerable medieval texts, such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Lay of the Werewolf, the prestigious women withhold their power in order to disguise the ultimate potential their power has. Pearl S. Buck once wrote, “Men and women should own the world as a mutual possession.” For a long time this was not thought did not cross a person's mind. Women were not allowed to own anything, had no opinion, and did not have many rights, such as being not able to vote. When women started publishing their writing and meeting up to discuss their unfair treatment, the prejudice thinking against women started to go way, and women started to get much more freedom. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm was popularly known as the “Grimms Brothers”, were characterized as one of the most dramatic writers in the 19th century. They were categorized by their short, simple sentences, colloquial language, and their well-organized approach to craft writings. Their writing was entitled Little Snow White, it was released in 1937 and it was about Snow White, a princess who falls into a deep, death-like rest after taking a bite from a poisoned apple. My impression about this narrative was an innocent little girl who had her step-mother hating her because of her beauty and kind-heart. The Little Snow-White by the Grimms Brothers is a fairy tale that reveals the goodness and the beauty of a little princess who is loved by all, however,…

Because although ''Maleficent'' is an adaption from ''Sleeping beauty'', the content of ''Maleficent'' is more risqué than the ''Sleeping Beauty'' because ''Sleeping Beauty'' is lame and tame. The plot of ''Maleficent'' is more interesting than ''Sleeping Beauty''. This is because at the end of ''Sleeping Beauty'', Princess Aurora is finally woken up because she has been kissed by a Prince but at the end of ''Maleficent'', Princess Aurora did not wake up even kissed by Prince, but she only wakes up when Maleficent kissed her because of the love showed between them. The story of ''Maleficent'' also amazed us because it almost changes the whole story of ''Sleeping Beauty'' especially the most evil character finally became a good person that makes us feel very…

This makes men have to appear to be bellicose or tough to impress society and prove themselves as being ‘manly’ men. For as far back as written history goes, people have been divided by certain roles. Men were considered stronger, therefore they were the hunters and protectors. Women were considered more gentler, making them the home keepers and child rearers. These roles soon morphed into men becoming the dominate role and thought of as superior while women continued to sink down the societal ladder and became nothing more than an object, mere property to their male counterparts. These roles slowly adhered themselves in people and was supported by society as a whole.…
