Attention getter: “No matter what I say, it draws controversy. It's sort of like the abortion issue.” This is a quote from a man named Billy Mitchell. This man, who stands 6’4 with a luscious chocolate brown mullet, with a patriotic tie always gracing his chest, is hard to ignore. As a video game player, Billy is hard to beat.
1. Relevance: Billy Mitchell is literally the video game player of the century. His record holdings include Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Pacman, Ms. Pacman, Centipede and Burger Time.
2. Credibility statement: I have been a big fan of Billy Mitchell since I have watched the documentary King of Kong; Fistful of Quarters. Billy has also liked two of my Instagram posts, plus retweeted a picture of a Gingerbread …show more content…
Point #2: Essentially no one can touch Billy Mitchells score in Donkey Kong for years until 2005 by elementary school teacher Steve Wiebe. He beat Billy’s score on his home machine and sent a VHS tape of the game to Twin Galaxies; the official record keepers for all video games.
1. According to the documentary, the officials at Twin Galaxies-who were also Billy’s friends- claimed the tape was tampered with, and urged Steve to replicate his high score of 1,006,600 live.
2. After many tries, Steve repeats his score at an arcade, only to be beaten by Billy again after he sent a tape showing a score of 1,047,200 (Gordon, S.). Twin Galaxies accepted Billy’s score without hesitation, which caused an uproar in the community. People viewed Twin Galaxies as a partisan organization; instead of being fair and accurate record keeping they picked and choose what they found credible or not.
3. Throughout the movie, it is shown that Billy doesn’t want anything to do with Steve, he turns down the several requests to meet with him and settle the dispute face to …show more content…
After the documentary was released-even though he never watched the Film-Billy’s life changed in some big ways
C. Point #3: The documentary showed Billy as an arrogant, and rude individual
1. According to Tanooki (2008), Billy was painted as a villain in the film in order to achieve that hero vs. evil storyline. Others argue that the editing of the movie made him see mean when in reality he’s a nice guy. Regardless, his performance came with its repercussions such as hate mail and constant abuse of his character. Billy said “bull sugar” to this, and gave several interviews with several different outlets in order to clear his name. He eventually moved on with his life, and still faces hate today.
2. For the 25th anniversary of Donkey Kong, Billy beat the record again in 2007 with a score of 1,050,200, and for the last time in 2010 with 1,062,800 (Ramsey, D.)
3. Billy doesn’t compete actively in the world of video games, however he attends gaming conventions and stays active on social media. He fills his time with his family, his restaurant, and his own line of hot sauces.
Transition to Conclusion: Ultimately
D. Restate central idea: Billy Mitchell is one of the most interesting, elite video gamers in
