Everyone needs a hero. Heroes come in many shapes and sizes, there is no prejudice to race, sex or social status. According to Webster’s dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for brave acts and fine qualities Beowulf, the oldest surviving epic poem in British literature, tells a story of a brave warrior. Beowulf’s character is portrayed as having many heroine characteristics such as; bravery, loyalty, and honor. He has to overcome difficult obstacles, shows enormous strength, and wins the loyalty of his people. Even though Beowulf is a fictional character his qualities are indicative of real people, such as Peyton Manning, who strives to do what is right, and spends their lives in servitude to others.

Differences are obvious one is fictional character, and the other is a real person. Both Beowulf and Peyton had parents in their same profession. Beowulf and his father are both warriors, and Peyton and his father are both professional football players. They each wanted to make their own way and not rely upon their father’s name. Peyton chose to go to the University of Tennessee while his father’s alma mater was Old Miss. Whereas Beowulf wanted to slay Grendel on his own, and not because he owes Hrothgar on behalf of his father. Both heroes wanted to stop suffrage, Peyton wants to stop suffrage of young children with his PeyBack foundation, and Beowulf wants to defeat Grendel to stop the suffering among the people. Neither one of these men are complacent. Peyton came back and continued to play football even after he faced a career ending neck injury. Beowulf could have died a hero and king of the land but chose to return to battle the dragon to save his people. This proves that it doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from, a hero is hero and strives to make the world a better place to
