There is a great deal of internal and external conflict that is apparent throughout each of the novels, and this is shown through the action and strife of each of the characters. Family life, external struggle, and just simply being a woman each work for and against the characters in women’s literature. It seems that throughout each book, the main characters can never catch a break. The reader always has this anxiety that they won’t make it through, just because it seems that they never can win. Though these emotions and feelings are demonstrated throughout the book, the main characters never stop. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. This motto directly relates to each character in some way, because they each are tough and never give up on anything that they are doing. The ability to vote was granted in 1776 for only white men with property, and 144 years later, women were finally granted the right to vote. This is just one of the many instances where women have not had the same opportunities as men. Right now, the U.S. Women’s soccer team is protesting the wage gap between women and men in America. They might not head to the Olympics (which they qualified for in February, 2016) because they get paid 30% less than the Men’s National soccer team. There are still wage gaps, there is still sexism, there are still people who believe that a woman’s place is in the kitchen cooking, or in a home taking care of children. This is why women’s literature is necessary in society. It depicts the real struggles women have against their families, society, their workforce, everything that is working against them. These injustices need to be brought to light and seen by the world. This is the plan of women’s literature, identifying how hard it actually is to be a woman in today’s time and age. Though things are becoming more equal as time progresses, this fight will never stop, this message will never be stressed
