There are many similarities between the two short stories The third wish and the monkeys paw. One major similarity they share is their overall mood. The mood both stories share is the feeling of mystery. Mystery is shown in the monkeys paw on page 88 when the Sergeant major was first telling the white family about the monkeys paw, and it's magical powers. The author writes "monkeys …show more content…
White is struggling to let her undead son into the house. "There was another knock, and another. The old women with a sudden wrench broke free and ran from the room. Her husband followed to the landing, and called for her appealingly as she hurried downstairs. He heard the chain rattle back and the bottom bolt drawn slowly and stiffly from the socket." This is an excellent quote to show suspense because while reading this the reader cannot help but to get nervous at the thought of what might happen next. Suspense is also shown during the third wish when the begins to talk about how mr. Peters new wife Leita was often sad, and wandered aimlessly. "She seemed restless, wandered much in the garden, and sometimes when he came back from the fields he would find the house empty and she would return after half an hour or so with no explanation of where she had been." This creates suspense because the reader cannot help but wonder after reading this what she had been doing, what is troubling her, and ask themselves if she will leave him. One major motif they share is in each of the stories there is someone much wiser then them, warning them that the wishes will not bring anything good, but only cause them more harm. An example of this can be shown at the beginning of the monkeys paw when sergeant major Morris tries to burn the paw because he knows it will do no good. After mr. White pulls in out of the fire the sergeant says "I threw it on the fire. If you keep it, don't blame me for what happens. Pitch it on the fire like a sensible man." This shows that the sergeant knows that the only way to fully be safe from the paw's power is to burn it and get rid of completely. When he says "don't blame me for what happens" it is hinting at the fact that this paw will do no good. However mr. White refuses to listen and keeps the paw anyway. A similar scenario can also be seen in the third wish. After mr. Peters saves the swan prince he asked for three wishes, as a token of gratitude. The prince fines this amusing and says "three wishes, he wants, the clever man~ well, I have yet to hear of a human being who made any good use of his three wishes they mostly end up worse off then they started." When the prince says this it should have tipped mr. Peters off that maybe the tree wishes is not the best idea. Instead he assumes that for some reason he will be able to handle this better than the average person. That is one motif the two
