One of the great horror/mystery writers of his time, Edgar Allan Poe, known for writing famous works such as “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” was and still is to this day, an amazing writer. Poe wrote many short stories and, according to Robert Giordano, is the to be credited for writing the first mystery (Giordano). So, in order to understand this genius’s mind, one must study the events that developed him. From beginning to end, one must study his life. All stories must have a beginning. Edgar Allan Poe’s beginning was on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother and father were Elizabeth and David Poe, but, unfortunately, they split up. Elizabeth had custody of Edgar and his two siblings until she died in 1811. Instead of being taken in by his father, Mr. and Mrs. Allan adopted him. His life from there was somewhat rocky.
Poe’s education and jobs throughout his life were unstable. Arthur Hobson Quinn reports that Poe went to school for six years; then, Edgar studied in America until he was seventeen, where he attended the University of Virginia (Quinn). His time at Virginia was cut short, though, because he did not have the money to continue university. From there he went into the military and achieved the rank of sergeant major. In Poestories.com by Robert Giordana, he states that Edgar Allan was supposed to have left his friend’s house to go to New York but took a wrong train (Giordana). Poe was found at Gunner’s hall, where he was then taken to a hospital. He died in that hospital on October 07, 1849. No one truly knows what happened to Poe, but there are theories. For instance, a theory states that Poe perhaps had rabies and died. Others hypothesize that he was mugged.
