The Nutcracker has a very soft and elegant sound whereas The Rite of Spring had a dark and mysterious sound. In The Nutcracker, the first part was March the tempo was lively and upbeat. The brass section started the piece off and then the strings, and then following the woodwinds. The meter or the song is a 4/4 and the rhythm is irregular with a lot of runs. The second piece was Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy with an andante non troppo. The introduction of the song had strings and the main instrument was the celesta with the staccato. Then there was a short section where the strings and the woodwinds went back and forth between each other. The main theme of the instruments was the celesta, accompanied by string instruments. The meter of the song was 2/4 and the rhythm was off beat from the string instruments. The final work was Trepak, it is a very lively song and as the tempo accelerates the dynamic increases also. The meter of the song is a 2/4 and has an A-B-A form. The rhythm of the song is similar throughout it had a long piece and then it went short, short then repeated itself. The ballet feels like a romantic love song that is happy and enchanting. The ballet deals with emotion, imagination, and magic. It is a very airy, sweet, and fluid work of art, I can see how it has gained so much popularity over the years as it gives a magical feeling when you watch

This piece has “characteristics of classic sonata form, and is similar in energy and length to such concert overtures as Shostakovich’s Festival Overture.” As with a typical sonata form, the piece is broken down into five main sections. The first introductory section features the opening horn fanfare and a full ensemble crescendo into the exposition. Starting at measure four, the first theme is articulated with tutti figures thru many different instruments. Immediately following that in measure twelve, we hear the inversion of that melody in the clarinets and alto saxophone. The inversion is then repeated in the upper woodwinds and in the cornet.…

This ballet is a masterpiece as you can tell in the beautiful backdrop for the final scene in the ballet created by Natalia Goncharova. This is a russian ballet and it needed a lot of russian bravura which was technically, and stamina wise very demanding. Not to mention my costume was a heavy, but beautiful red velvet jacket with pearls and gold embellishments. The room in which the Goncharova backdrop was displayed was incredibly moving with the music from the ballet rejoicing in your ear, and then you turn around to see a video presented by the English National Ballet that though was creative, seemed very distracting and…

Scrooged, an irrefutable 90’s film about a cynical, sarcastic, and terribly witty Frank Cross deals with the turmoil of life and death in a breaking-the-fourth-wall film adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Scrooged is an interesting adaptation, compared to the usual animated family-friendly films that pay homage to the Christmas spirit. This film is not only different than the run of the mill film that copies the novel word for word, it also carries the darker tones of the classic Charles Dickens story that is unusual in contemporary Christmas films. The movie is interesting because the plot involves a live show of A Christmas Carol, while the main character Frank, deals with the same plot in his own modern reality.…

“Classical Fantasy” choreographed by Jerry Opdenaker, restaged and danced by Ciera Fielding, was a beautifully done piece because of it’s nod to classical ballet. The reference to classical ballet was due to both the musical choice of a composed piece lacking lyrics, and purely instrumental, as well as her outfit that consisted of a tutu, her ballet shoes with the boxed toe to allow her to go fully on point, and lastly due to her perfection of the aplomb. In this piece Ms. Fielding used indirect space by taking command of the entire floor as she pirouetted from each space to transition into the next move. While her body was very upright, and she often spun on toe, her sense of weight was light weight. It was almost like she was floating gracefully across the stage, which created a fluid effect to her sudden sense of time.…

Holidays, in addition to being a festive time for celebrating with friends and family, is also a time to enjoy classic fine arts together. A stable every Christmas season is the Nutcracker, which the literature is republished in multiple forms including play, dance, and orchestra concerts. This season I had the pleasure of being a audience of The Nutcracker presented at the McCaw Hall. The show was phenomenal, and included moments of cheerfulness and happiness, but during others moments of grave danger and suspense. The performers applied contrasting bodily techniques and motions to express different emotions, and wrapped up the scene with appropriate props and decors that awed the audience ever time the stage came to light.…

Comparison Between The Rite of Spring and Appalachian Spring The Rite of Spring (1913), composed by Igor Stravinsky, and Appalachian Spring (1944), by Aaron Copland, are ballets that center around folk culture. The Rite of Spring suggests a story of human sacrifice and has an overall a harsh and almost disturbing mood. Appalachian Spring tells the story of a new couple celebrating their new house and is lively and happy. The two ballets stem from a common base of folk culture, yet the mood of each one is very different due to the individual emotions that the composers wanted to express.…
