Between the two short stories I personally enjoyed “Job History” more even though the style of writing was more monotone, and there wasn’t much action, I thought it was an interesting story. I personally can’t relate to the story since I myself have never had a job, so my job history is non-existent. Proulx gives very little detail. She doesn’t describe what they are wearing or what everyone looks like. Proulx never describes any of their facial expressions or what they look like after a tragedy has occurred or their feelings towards it. Oates goes into much greater detail giving every detail she can, to what everyone is wearing to what the narrator is feeling for each of the girls in the story. The writing styles between Proulx and Oates in these two stories can almost be described as complete opposites.
The conflicts in each story are also very different. In “Job History” it seems like there are many conflicts from Leeland’s children to Leeland’s wife getting sick towards the end of the story, but the major conflict in the story is the fact that Leeland can’t keep a job. This conflict is very different from the conflict in “Three Girls.” The conflict in “Three Girls” is much simpler and small compared to all of the hardships Leeland faces throughout his life. In “Three Girls” their conflict is trying to speak to Marilyn Monroe without ruining it for the both of
